The "bones" and "skin" are metaphorical and taken from an ancient text in which these are actually referring to inner and outer beauty, respectively. Most people are shallow and only see outward beauty and fail to acknowledge inner beauty.
The female lead, Shi Yi, has memories of her past life in which her heart belonged to Zhou Sheng Chen. That life ended in tragedy for them, and in this life, her only goal and desire is to find him again... and one day, she does. He does not look the same, but she knows that beneath the outer appearance, it is him. He, however, does not remember her.

There is a Chinese drama adaption but in 2 part, first was the ancient chinese drama (One and Only) and second was the present time ( Forever and Ever).

(I don't know how the writers of the drama converted this 18+3 chapters of the book into beautiful and amazing drama. The fact that in the book, there are very small portion mentioned about ancient times otherwise whole book is in present/ modern time.
If someone who is book addicted or fond of reading book than go for it. Otherwise, first watch both the dramas and then read book because there are certain things which kind of rush in the drama where as in the book it clearly mentioned.
My biggest mistake was I started watch the second part of drama when it was ongoing and can't wait for ending, so I read whole book in One day. Afterwards when I saw the remaining episodes I personally kind of feel that certain things which clearly mentioned in the book, kind of out mentioned or rushed it.
This book is so beautiful as taught me that, what matter in the relationship is the inner beauty of the person and trust your trust on them.)
