Jennie's POV
"Okay class, I have to go and sort out an incident in the English office. If you could stay silent reading for 10 minutes whilst I'm gone, that would be great."
Naturally, the place erupted the second she'd left the room. Don't get me wrong, this is the joint top set, but somehow my class was the one with the troublemakers, the naturally clever kids who just couldn't be bothered to apply themselves. The only people I talked to were Harvey and Melissa, and I was forever grateful that Ms Howells had allowed us to sit together, whilst everyone else was forced into a seating plan.
At that moment in time, 'everyone else' was currently involved in a stationery fight across the classroom. This was all fun and games when it was just rubbers being pinged off rulers, but when Felix 'accidentally' launched a stapler too close to where we were sat, I pulled Harvey and Melissa under the safety of the table. Wednesday afternoons were always the worst - everyone's had enough of the school week, but Friday isn't close enough.
"Jeeeeez," Melissa muttered as a calculator bounced off the table and landed on the floor a few feet away from us. "You wouldn't think some of these lads were actually 16. They give us teenagers a bad name."
Harvey agreed. "Too right. Speaking of being 16, isn't it your birthday soon Jennie?"
"3 weeks tomorrow. I don't really know what to do, I don't fancy holding a house party and getting my place trashed. I was just thinking of going out for a meal with you guys and Tilda, and possibly Rosie and a few others from work."
Melissa and Harvey exchanged glances. "What about a certain JG?" he asked with a wink.
The memory of Monday evening was still fresh in my mind, and I cringed over the thought of it.
"What would he try and do this time, Jennie? Slip a hand up your skirt?"
The calculator made such a satisfying thud on her forehead.
"After that fiasco I still don't know where I stand. Are we just seeing each other? Are we together? I have no idea. Boys are, and will remain, a complete mystery to me."
The pair agreed, Harvey more enthusiastically than Melissa. "Did I tell you guys, I went on a date with a boy from the private school on the weekend?"
"No?! Spill."
"It was all fine, we were talking about Game of Thrones, he was giving me all the signals, it seemed right? He implied he had been with other boys before, he seemed pretty smooth and experienced.
"But...?"
"We went to sit outside to watch the sun set, and we held hands, so it was still going fine. He moved in for the kiss, and we must have been kissing for about 5 seconds when he pulled away. Turns out, he was just curious, but the kissing felt wrong. He paid the whole bill and apologised, but I just can't help feeling so disappointed. It felt so...right."
"I'm sorry Harv," I said, stroking his arm. "You'll find a guy, honest."
"Thanks Jen."
Melissa had been quiet throughout this, too quiet. She was looking at her phone with an unreadable expression; some sort of combination of shock and disgust, with a sprinkle of confusion and a shot of hilarity.
"Oh, Leighton Samuels, you slimey bitch, what did we do to deserve you?"
"What??"
Melissa looked thoroughly pissed off. "There's a new girl joining our school tomorrow."
"From the 'slimey bitch' description, I take it she isn't very pleasant?"
"She's pure nasty. I'm not kidding, I've never met a bigger snake in my life. She'll slither in and steal friends and boyfriends, but nobody ever dares stand up to her. If she doesn't like you, she will make your life utter hell. It's just easier to stay on her good side. Consider yourself warned."
