prologue — nothing happened in the way i wanted

SEPTEMBER 1, 1991.

REYNA BLACK FELT SICK AS SHE WANDERED AROUND THE HOGWARTS EXPRESS, trying to find an empty compartment. Her nerves were getting the best of her — would she make friends? Would everyone hate her after finding out her last name? Her mother did warn her that not everyone would be too friendly . . .

Praying for the best, Reyna continued to walk, glancing into each compartment to see if any had some space for her. They all seemed to be full, and the only one that had some space seemed to be occupied by a very affectionate couple who seemingly missed each other very much.

"Ew," Reyna muttered to herself, scrunching up her nose and looking down at her untied shoes — her mother usually did her laces for her, but she supposed she'd have to teach herself now.

Much to her luck, the next compartment only had two people sitting in it: a girl with rather bushy brown hair, and opposite her was a small boy who looked almost as nervous as Reyna felt.

Very hesitantly, Reyna found the courage to open the compartment door. The sound caught the attention of the two inside, who both looked up to see who it was.

"Sorry," said Reyna sheepishly, fiddling with her hair. "Do you mind if I join you two? Everywhere else is full."

"Sure," the girl said with a small smile, gesturing to the seat besides her. Reyna beamed, hastily chucking her trunk on the rack above them before sitting down. "I'm Hermione Granger, and this is Neville Longbottom. We're both starting our first year."

Reyna frowned slightly at the boy's last name, before she realised that they were waiting for her to introduce herself.

"Oh — I'm Reyna," she said slowly, unsure on whether or not she should say her last name. "Reyna Black. I'm also starting my first year."

She had expected it, but her heart still stung when she noticed both Hermione's and Neville's smiles drop ever so slightly. Neville, the poor guy, looked absolutely terrified.

"As in — Sirius Black?" he squeaked, flinching slightly as he said the name. "The mass murderer?"

"Er — yes, he's my uncle — but I'm nothing like him!" Reyna assured quickly, hoping that they wouldn't hate her. "I don't believe in all that pureblood mania — my mum's a 'blood traitor', or whatever — I promise!"
