Most children yearn to leave their birthplaces behind, to put all they once knew behind and brave the unknown of the world. I respect this idea. I see the desire and the glamor behind it. I was just never one of those kids.
Puerto Luz is my home. It is my birthplace, the start of my existence. When we were young, my friends and I built an entire life for ourselves in our city. We loved our home, with all its flaws and tribulations. The four of us didn't start out with anything; we were born and raised with the bare minimum of what was needed for survival.
Looking back, I realize I have more now than I ever did living in Puerto Luz. Then again, that's only if you take into account the material things that I have. In reality, I've lost everything.

Puerto Luz is one of many ports in the region of Evyana, the official smallest region in the world. It was once just an island, part of the larger region of Zestasiá.
Half a century before Evanya became its own region, power hungry lords divided up the island by various channels. These paranoid morons took every movement of their fellow lords as a threat. They all isolated themselves and their people from each other. There were so many on the island, yet no one could talk with one another.
According to my uncle, things didn't start to change until one of the lords died, and his wife took control of the city. She became the lady of what we now call Port Drosera, the port with the lavender sands. Before the first lady, while all the old morons still had control, these cities all acted like their own kingdoms, and as such, they all had their own ports. Today, only the old folk of the island call the cities by their old names. Everyone else calls the cities by their ports. I imagine that anyone who hasn't paid much mind to Evanya and visits would be horribly confused as to why every city is port something or cape whatever.
Evanya became its own region, and one decade later, all the old lords were overthrown, the borders now open. I've always imagined that looking at Evanya from a bird's eye view must either be the most beautiful or the most hideous thing in existence because of all the scattered bridges.
I know there must be some order, but when my friends and I were last in Puerto Luz, one of our favorite things to do was to climb to the top of the clock towers and count how many bridges the mist would allow us to see.
Sometimes, we managed to bribe the guards with pan dulce so we could climb their towers and look out at everything. Going up there was always the best. The guards had the best view over everything. The guard towers were always high enough to feel the cooler air, but not so high that you could escape the breeze of the sea.
There are days now, where I wish I could go back in time, that I could go back and see my past self and prevent my life from turning into what it is now. However, most days, I don't humor the thought that it could happen. I know that if the opportunity were to ever present itself, I would never take it.
These memories are the closest thing I have to comfort, and I wouldn't taint them for anything. Ignorance is bliss, and all children have the right to be ignorant for as long as they possibly can. I only wish I remained ignorant for five years longer.

Ten years ago today was the start to our end.
It started because of Vince's hair.
Vince has very coily hair. It's annoying to deal with, which is why Calvel was usually the only one to braid it. One of his mothers has very curly hair, not like Vince's but similarly enough. Normally, it was Calvel that did Vince's hair.
