I awake the next morning in an unfamiliar room, filled with old antiques. There are many beds lined up in a row, and I begin to realize there are other maids sleeping on the beds. I force myself to sit up as I look around, trying to remember what had happened yesterday. 'Oh.. that's right. I am in a new kingdom. Isn't someone going to wake up the rest of these maids?' The ticking of the clock fills the silent room. I take a look at it and realize it's 6:32 in the morning. 'Everyone should be awake by now.' I think, but then realize this is a new kingdom. There must be new rules. In the midst of my thoughts, a loud bell rings, causing me to yelp and jump. The other maids arise slowly, a couple staring at me. I notice the maids all have similar appearances to mine. Pale skin, bright eyes, but not white hair. I sigh, content that I still kind of look like the maids. I watch as some get up and begin fixing their beds. I do the same, striving to fit in. The girl who's bed is next to mine, speaks in a whisper. "Are you new?" I look at the girl in the corner of my eye and nod my head. She grins warmly, causing me to have the urge to smile back. "It's nice to meet you. All of us have heard many things about you." She finally says after fixing her bed quickly. I finish also, and we stand in front of each other. She holds her hand out, gesturing for me to shake it. I do as she wants. "Breakfast starts in 10 minutes." I listen to her words, my eyes suddenly perking up. "You all have breakfast?" There's a hint of urgency and excitement in my voice as my grip on her hand becomes tighter. She nods her head, having to pry her hand out of mine. I clear my throat and place my hands at my side. "Can you please show me where the dining hall is?" I ask, trying to calm myself down. She nods her head and makes graceful strides out of the room as I walk quickly after, my steps seeming clumsy. After taking many turns in every hallway, we make it to a dining hall, many tables lined up in long rows. There is already food set on the tables as hundreds of maids sit at them, taking nimble bites out of the fancy foods on the plates. My breath hitches as I stumble back, not expecting to see such a sight. The girl next to me watches my reaction with a slight grin on her face. I must remark that this room is extremely large, making me wonder how much even more larger this elegant castle is. I finally croak out, "Why are there so many maids?" She clears her throat as we both walk to a table, filled to the rim with people. We both take a seat. "You'll see why soon. This castle is remarkably large, so maybe that should hint why there are so many of us." I shove some food in my mouth as she explains what we do here. "There are assigned chores we do every day. We must complete all of them before we can rest." The word rest doesn't sit well with me, causing me to stop eating my food and look attentively up at the girl. "There are at least twenty. On good days, fifteen." I can't help but let a little smile tug at my lips. "There's food, rest, luxury, and only twenty chores? This is the best kingdom ever!" The words sound jumbled on top of each other as I try to fathom why they would treat us all so well. I look at the girl but her eyes seem distant. She rubs the back of her neck as she speaks. "Uh.. yes it is quite swell here. But.. I would try to steer clear of the prince at all times. He is.. quite the character." Her voice sounds quiet and unsure as she says this, her pale skin turning white. My smile fades as I hear this. What could be wrong with him? "Well, would you mind telling me why?" I take a small bite out of my food, making sure to listen closely. She doesn't answer. "Well.." I say, hoping to make this uncomfortable conversation to a better subject. "What is your name?" Her white skin turns to it's normal pale again as she smiles, looking at me under her long eyelashes. "Carsile. What is yours?" She finally takes a bite out of her food, showing she's become more comfortable now. I grin and reply. "My name is Ria. It's nice to meet you." We both warmly smile at each other as we eat contentedly, making me wonder if I've made a new friend.
The rest of the day, we did exactly as she said we would, but I obeyed what she said and stayed away from the prince. Since I've finished my chores and Carsile is out of sight, I decided to take a well earned nap under the orchard tree while basking the warm sun. Oddly enough, I actually didn't see him, the prince, today. With a sigh, I fall asleep on the comfortable green grass, dreaming of how good life is now.
