Detroit, Michigan 2002

The sounds of heavy breathing and heels clicking quickly against the pavement echoed through the secluded alleyway. Hurriedly, Angelise skillfully observed her surroundings as she made it toward the end of the alley.

Slowing her pace, she leaned against the brick wall as she tried to catch her breath. Suddenly, she heard heavy footsteps coming from the corner. Gripping the knife in her hand tightly, she waited for the steps to draw closer and whipped around to stick the knife directly toward the intruders neck.

"Shit Angel!" they whispered exasperatedly. "Watch where you point that thing!"

Recognition immediately spread across her face as she sighed in relief and lowered her hand.

"My bad LJ," she spoke. "I thought you were one of Ace's men."

Checking over his shoulder to make sure he wasn't followed, he looked back toward her.

"We gotta go," he told her. "Ted is waiting for us by the docks."

Nodding her head, she looked around the brick wall to check the coast before the duo ran in the opposite direction.

Running down the empty roads, the street lights guided them toward their destination. A few minutes passed before they reached the docks. In the distance, they noticed a figure and came to a stop when the body turned to reveal Ted.

"I was wondering what took you two," he expressed. "I was starting to get worried."

Angelise brushed her fingers through her hair as she sighed. "Had to make sure we weren't being followed."

Looking beyond his shoulder, Angelise noticed two cars. Furrowing her eyebrows, she directed her attention back toward Ted.

"Why are there two cars?" she questioned.

"Because you're not coming with us." Ted confessed.

LJ looked at him in disbelief as a look of confusion took place on her face.

"What do you mean she's not coming with us?" he exclaimed. "We can't leave her alone!"

"It's too risky!" Ted snapped. "Ace won't stop until she's dead and our best chance at keeping her safe is to separate."

LJ shook his head and began to argue how the best thing to do was to stick together. Angelise felt that familiar feeling of helplessness as the shadow of Ace loomed over her.

Breathing in a deep sigh, she turned toward the two. "He's right."

LJ took a stepped toward her as he shook his head. "No, I can't leave you."

She gently placed her hand on his cheek. "We don't have time to talk about this, we have to go and this is the best way to keep you guys safe."

Hearing the finality in her voice, LJ had no choice but to accept the decision. Walking toward the car, Ted pulled a duffel bag from the backseat and handed it over to her.
