Charlie awoke in his cot on a ship that was anchored 30 miles off the shore of Boston. The first thing he noticed was how silent it was on the ship. Last night, he saw the ship teeming with life, and this morning at approximately 5 am, not a peep. Not a soul was to be found, which was very strange for this time of day. He stumbled his way to the top deck and yelled out, "Hello! Where is everyone?" He heard nothing. A dense fog had rolled in, and he could hardly see in front of him. The ship was anchored, and the waves rocked the ship to and fro. All of a sudden, he heard a clash. It sounded as if a vase had been knocked over by accident. He ran down to the captain's quarters where the noise had come from. He slowly creaked the door back and saw two feet sticking out from behind a desk. Still standing at the entrance of the door, he pushed back the door a bit further and saw the back of a hideous creature devouring his captain. Trying not to make a sound, he timidly backed away from the door. As he took a step back, his boot bumped against an old wooden box filled with old whiskey bottles. The sound of the bottles clanking together alerted the monster to his presence. Chills went down Charlie's spine as he realized the grave mistake he had just made. His eyes widened in fear and glanced in the direction of the monster. A head that was almost human emerged from behind the desk, with eyes completely black and a mouth hung open with blood dripping from its lips. The head continued emerging up, showcasing a long, snake-like neck. He realized he had just made a grave mistake. He took off in the opposite direction, running across the deck of the ship. The creature screeched in anger as it clamored its way around the desk and towards Charlie. He ran to the front of the ship, looking over the vast ocean that surrounded him. He turned quickly and saw the creature running at him on all fours, with its long neck straight out ready to devour him. Charlie looked back down at the ocean, and understood there was no other way out of this nightmare. He leaped off the ship. As he fell to his destruction, he looked back, seeing the long neck and hideous face of the creature staring at him over the side of the ship. He squinted his eyes and crashed into the ocean, but he didn't feel a thing. In fact, he stopped falling. He slowly opened his eyes and saw wooden beams overhead. He was back in his cot. He sighed in relief and sat up, realizing it had been a dream. After a few seconds of joy, he noticed that not a sound could be heard on the ship, and no one could be seen. His mind stuttered in confusion, and then he heard the crash of a vase coming from what appeared to be the captain's quarters.
