You creep through the hallway and you hear a low, irritated groan from Dan’s bedroom. It was the middle of the night and you were both having trouble sleeping due to the loud claps of thunder that were brewing outside of your flat. You being as easily scared as you were found the deep rumbling noises frightening, and so it was hard for you to peacefully fall asleep alone in your bedroom.
You tiptoed into his room and made sure that your footsteps were gentle enough that the floorboards didn’t creak. You could see him fidgeting underneath his duvet and you could tell that the thunder was making it hard for him to sleep too.
“Dan?” you whispered, hoping that he was awake.
His head emerged from underneath the checkered duvet and turned to look at you as you hovered around the door. You couldn’t see his face properly as the only light available was emitting from the dim amber lamp that he kept next to his bed, but you could make out a faint, sweet smile that pitied you. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his hands and lifted up the corner of the duvet, gesturing you to join him.
You took him up on his offer and shuffled quietly into the bed beside him. He rolled over and placed his arm around your waist, pressing you gently against his body. He placed his chin on the top of your head and started to stroke your hair soothingly, making you feel calm and protected.
“Are you scared of the thunder?” he asks quietly. You nod into his chest as you’re too sleepy to reply, and the whole atmosphere is so calming that you’re drifting off to sleep.
“Well, there’s no need to be scared y/n. It’s just the Thunder King and the Lightening King having a game of chess! You see, when one of them plays a good move, the other gets angry. And when the storm gets really bad, it’s because the other had won. So, you see, there’s nothing to be scared of y/n.”
Throughout his little story he had continued stroking and patting your hair with his other hand sitting upon your waist. He’s waiting for you to reply when he realizes that you’ve fallen asleep. He chuckles quietly and smiles to himself.
“Night y/n, sweet dreams.”
