I lay on my new bed for the next half-hour. Finally, I muster enough strength to check out my room. Swinging my legs off the side of the bed, I sit up and look down at my clothes, which I haven't had a chance to change for several days. I shuffle into the bathroom connected to the back of the room. I glance in the mirror hanging above the sink and take in my rumpled hair, filthy clothes, and sunken eyes.
Not my best look. I now officially look like death.
Disgusted with my appearance, I quickly take a shower, letting the warm water sooth my emotions. After I finish, I get out feeling renewed and ready to face the world. I walk to the closet by my bed and find new clothes laid out in a neat pile for me. I grab out a pair of black jeans, a purple tank top, and a designer leather jacket. Once I get changed, I throw my hair into a ponytail and explore the rest of the room. In the far corner, a massive bookcase dominates the wall and overflows with books, which I promise myself to go through later. Sitting next to the bookcase is a small oak-wood desk, cluttered with stacks of paper. The last thing against the back wall was the door to the bathroom. The rest of the room was mainly taken up by two beds to the left and right, with small walk-in closets at the foot of each one.
With time to kill before Avery came back to check on me, I decide to go through a few of the papers on the desk. Most of them seem to be a random compilation of research, as if for someone to study for school. As I ruffle through the papers, a book flies through the air and hits me in the back of the head.
I spin around and find another girl standing in the doorway with her arms full of books and another one floating near her head. She seemed to be timid and had nervousness in her bright ice blue eyes, but she stood her ground trying to look tough. She was only about 5' 2" and was as thin as a stick. She was wearing simple tennis shoes, shorts, and a lightly colored flannel. Her blonde hair was tossed in a messy ponytail, and she had glasses perched on her nose. I watch her carefully as she tries to edge backward, to get as far away from me as possible.
"Hey is everything alright? Don't worry I won't do anything, let's just talk," I tell the girl calmly.
I hold my hands up in a friendly gesture and slowly make my way to my bed. I plop down on it, and look to her expectantly. She stands there for another few moments before nodding slightly and goes to put the books by the desk. She plucks the remaining book that was still floating out of the air and hugs it to her chest. She then jumps up onto the bed opposite me, sitting with her feet tucked beneath her.
I smile reassuringly asking, "So what's your name? I'm Violet Hill."
"I'm Lily," she says softly.
"Well nice to meet you then Lily. So is this your room or something?"
She pauses before answering, "Yes it is. Now why are you here?"
"Well it looks like we're roommates then. This is the room is was told I'd be staying in," I say brightly. My smile slightly falls when I see she still looks scared. "You don't have many friends do you? Hmm... well guess what now I can be your friend. You seem to be pretty cool. I mean all the books here... it's great!"
With that she finally cracks and gives me a huge smile. She jumps up off the bed and pulls me to my feet, talking animatedly about a few of her favorite ones. She randomly starts pulling multiple off the bookcase and making a few piles of books, I have to read later on. Once there's a stack of about 25 books she stops and looks to me.
"Sorry for getting a bit carried away, books just really excite me," she tells me shyly, "I should probably ask what you're into."
"Oh don't worry about it," I reply, "anyways I'm more curious about how that book you had earlier was floating."
