First week in lockdown: barely survived.
But Hyunjin could tick it off his list, at least. The only good thing about it was that they still didn't have any online classes because the college was setting up schedules and stuff to digitalize every major as fast as they could.
Without the pressure of homework on his shoulders, the week passed somewhat easier.
But it still was exhausting to adjust to his friends screaming everytime they video called, his mom texting him every minute and his dad sending him covid memes he found, along with his grandma sending voice messages from his mothers phone to retell every single day how funny it was when she lost her teeth again. The pressure to answer everything was way too big for him, a natural introvert who preferred locking himself up for two months straight to paint and listen to music.
Worst part was, Felix kept giving him those stupidly amazing forehead kisses and he so desperately wanted them when he was wide awake and not about to fall asleep completely, as a way to recharge his energy.
Yet he refused to ask Felix about it, because it was weird, and that was the last thing Hyunjin wanted to look like in his friend's eyes.
What if Felix stopped talking to him for being a weirdo? He just couldn't risk it.
He had too many things inside his head, running around like wild cheetahs. He needed to talk to someone, Hyunjin needed to talk to his best friend. The only who would listen to him, nodd or hum to what he said, give him some time to process things and then tell him what he thought honestly.
He needed to talk to Minho.
Right now, both roommates were watching some random movie Felix had chosen. Hyunjin didn't know what it was about, his mind was far away since the film started.
He sighed heavily, standing up from the couch. "Lix, I'm gonna go to the balcony for some air."
The freckled hummed and Hyunjin took it as a sign to go.
They were lucky. When arranging their dorms, they'd ended up with one of the few ones with a little balcony where they could spend time in, most of them having just a big window as a replacement.
Hyunjin walked there rather slowly, too tired to really rush. He got his phone and dialed his best friend as soon as he made sure he had some privacy, closing the door to seclude the place better.
Minho picked up after three long beeps. "Hey, Hyun." he said, as calm as he always was.
"I need help." the taller's tone must have given away how stressed he actually was as there was movement from the other side of the call and the sound of a door closing not too long after.
"I'm all ears."
Hyunjin smiled, greatful. "I feel like I can't breathe with everyone suddenly texting me now that we can't properly meet and the need to answer everything is giving me so much anxiety it's driving me nuts. Between our friends, my mom, my dad and my grandma along with some other people I can't even remember, I feel like I spend the day on my phone just answering texts and calls like a robot, pretending to be someone else constantly."
"Why do you feel the need to answer everything?" contrary to Hyunjin's, Minho's voice remained calm.
The taller sighed, tapping his fingers on the railing. "Because they'll leave me if I don't."
"Hyunjin, video call. Now." the tone shifted to a serious one the younger boy never dared ignoring. He quickly hung up the phone and switched to facetime. "Okay, that's better."
Hyunjin looked away. "A normal call was enough." he mumbled under his breath.
"Look at me." the brunette did as told. "Do I respond to every text you send me?" he questioned. Hyunjin shook his head, Minho only answered when he felt like it. "Did you leave me?"
"No, but—"
"Did you leave me, Hyunjin?"
The younger huffed. "No." he felt like he was getting scolded.
"You wanna know why? Because you're a true friend. Things as simple as texts don't matter in a real friendship and if they do then there's something really wrong there. If someone lets you go because you left on read a message full of bullshit then it's their fucking problem, not yours, and you're better off without them."
Hyunjin got his point, but it was easier said than done. He feared abandonment. Minho was probably the only one who truly knew the depth of his fear and he recognized hesitation in his best friend's eyes as soon as he saw it.
He signed softly. "Look at our chat, how's the last message?"
"I left you on read." Hyunjin didn't have to go see it to know, he had felt awful doing it but he just hadn't found an answer for Minho and had many other messages piled up, waiting to be answered as well.
"Yet I'm here now that you need me, see? Silence your phone, archive contacts and even turn on 'do not disturb', it doesn't matter, really. If you feel bad when leaving people on read just don't open the message and if people complain you don't need to explain shit to them—" loud knocking was heard from Minho's side and the ravenette sighed, rubbing his temple. "Let me take a fucking shit, Jisung! I'll go cuddle you in a bit!"
A faint 'okay, sorry' had Minho smiling again, lightly chuckling. "You're so in love, man." commented Hyunjin.
"Back to you, Hwang. As I was saying, you have to live your life how you want and you don't need to explain it to anyone."
Hyunjin frowned. "What about my family?"
"They've always been next to you, I'm sure your mom will understand if you tell her to give you some space. I'll tell our stupid friends to slow down in the group chat too, I'll say I can't keep up with so many messages and calls, okay?" Minho smiled like a best friend would, and Hyunjin felt greatful for having him and his surprisingly rational mind in his life.
But he wasn't done with the list of worries. "There's something more."
"Shoot. Mister Lee, the bestest friend in the world, will solve all of your problems." the taller chuckled.
He then lowered his voice. "It's about Felix. He's been—"
"Jin, everything alright?" as if called, the freckled boy peeked his head through the door with a worried expression.
"Ah! Lix! Yeah, yes. Everything's great. Min, I gotta go." his cheeks flushed bright red as he nervously smiled.
Minho lifted an eyebrow in interest. "You sure you're okay now?" Hyunjin nodded. "Okay, I'm here if you need me again. Also, can I tell Sung I was talking to you cause you were worried about something? I won't go into detail but I still don't wanna lie to him and tell him I was just taking a shit."
"Yeah, no problem. Thank you, Min."
"Your homework is to spend the next whole week with your phone on 'do not disturb'." was the last thing Minho said before hanging up.
Hyunjin chuckled and went next to Felix, urging the blonde to get inside with him.
"Are you okay?" asked the shorter.
The brunette nodded and ruffled his friend's hair. "Just some anxiety with so many texts from so many people."
Felix sighed, visibly relieved. He had thought for a second that maybe something was really wrong in Hyunjin's life or something, diving into the worst case scenario head first.
The taller took his phone and went to do as Minho had told him, but a notification from the man himself popped up on his screen, making him blush.
