Holding tight onto the sheriff's hand like you could be swept away by the sandstorm at any moment, you were starting to regret your life decisions. Not only did your eyes genuinely suck at doing their one job in the artificial sunlight, but now you had also gotten a bunch of sand in them. So you just had to trust Star with your safety for now.
The two of you had made your way into the Dunes, hiding behind a huge pile of rocks and trying to scope out the suspect behind it all: the dreaded fan. *shudder*
"Eugh.. ya see anything?"
You questioned, blinking rapidly to try and get the grains of sand out of your eyes."Hmm.." He hummed, peaking out from behind the rocks while squinting his eyes and holding up a hand to the forehead to get a better view. Or just to shield from the light. Or both. Probably both. For a while, you stayed silent, and right as you were about to say something-
"There it is!"
"Wha-"
"Here, shield yerself with this and listen to me, okay?"
He kneeled down next to you on one knee and threw his poncho onto you without any kind of heads-up.
"Hey!"
"Look i know it's prob'ly not yer expertise and all but i need you to turn off that fan. Can ya do that?"
Although confused, you put on the poncho and readjusted your hat, looking past him to better see the spinning metal in the stormy distance.
"Wait, why do i gotta turn it off? You'd be better at navigatin' in the chaos!"
"Right, but all i've got is a six shooter and that won't be very helpful against a massive metal fan. I dunno know about you, but i don't feel like gettin' shot today!"
"Well i don't feel like goin' blind today either! And i'm not sure how useful this'll be when i can't see sh-"
You hit the fabric of the poncho with your hand in defense right before getting interrupted by his hand to your mouth, effectively keeping you from swearing. For now.
"We're just gunna have to work together then, i'm just throwin' stuff at the wall here but i think i've got a plan."
"Spit it then, sheriff. Whatcha got?"
...
The storm was getting unbearably strong the more steps you took towards the fan, trying with all it's might to blow away everything in it's path. But the two of you persisted, determined to fix this mess. You had agreed to be his hands while he's your eyes in this plan: he lead the way, and you just had to pull one single lever once you got close enough. It was definitely easier said than done, but it was working!
"Can you see it?!"
"What???"
"THE FAN, CAN YOU SEE THE DAMN FAN?!"
"Yup, it's right up ahead! Just- a few...more....steps!"
North Star called out through the deafening wind, until he got down on the ground right infront of it, hooked onto your arms (Emperor's New Groove-style) and pulled you forwards, signaling that this was your chance. Reaching out, you got a hold on the giant lever and flipped it down, finally turning it off.
The two of you practically fell on top of each other once the wind died down, letting out huge sighs of relief.
"*GASP* let's...*pant*...let's both agree, to NEVER. EVER. *sigh*..do that again."
"Heheh! *cough* ...agreed."
Getting up and dusting off all the sand for the 100th time, you took Star's hands and lifted him up to his feet, shoving his hat back onto his head. Which flew off during the mission: possible.
"...should we head back into town?"
"Sure thing, partner."
...
Townsfolk had gathered in the centre, confused chatter turning to cheering and laughter once they noticed the duo walk through the gates, holding each other as support. You quickly shoved him over to a fox lady- Ceroba. His friend, you assumed, and ran off into the alleys yelling "Adiós!" to your rival.
That evening when you got home, you immediately threw yourself onto the sofa, not bothering to even take a bath in the lake or something. Nope. Just you, your sofa, your thoughts and...
"Oh shoot."
You muttered, quietly raising the edge of the poncho you got to borrow from Starlo and forgot to return. The fabric was soft, light and comfortable."No wonder he always wears this thing."
You slump over once again and knock yourself out, having absolutely no clue just how much this one act of truce with your rival would impact your life later on.
