(A/N: this was written before I had started writing Innocence Lost, so it's definitely not totally accurate to Marion's character, also like the title says, this is unfinished. I just don't want the few who read my book to feel like I'm abandoning it, I just hate writing on my phone 😭)

The bleak winter had struck France suddenly– one day it was sunny and a reasonable temperature, the next it was snowing and the land had practically frozen over. The children had huddled up in Chateau d'Ombrage, Hugo and Marion would curl up next to the fireplace, while Amicia watched from a slight distance.

Marion told the boy stories to distract him from the howling winds, and the tingling sensation in his fingers and toes; sometimes she'd even sing to him. She was surprisingly good at it, considering the frigid winter air  would usually make it even harder for her to breathe.

Hugo cuddled into Marion's side, a thin quilt wrapped around the two of them. She quietly hummed to Hugo– it was a tune she could recall Béatrice singing to her and Amicia when they were little. The little boy was practically asleep, his blue eyes fluttering shut every few seconds, only to open again as he fought sleep.

Amicia watched the scene with a small smile; even in the coldest winters, Marion found ways to warm her entire being. The flames in the fireplace flickered and crackled, illuminating the area. The brunette watched as Marion gently ran her fingers through Hugo's short brown hair, lulling him into an even sleepier state.

It felt tranquil; it was the most peace that the De Rune siblings and Marion had since the Inquisition raided their home. Hugo stilled in Marion's arms, his body flushed against her's. She stopped humming when she noticed the boy had fallen asleep; his little eyes were closed, and some of his hair disheveled from her running her fingers through it.
