It was midnight when Mohini felt someone gently shaking her from sleep. Her lashes fluttered open, and she found Nakul leaning over her, his face close to hers. She almost screamed, but his palm quickly covered her lips.
“Shhh…” he whispered, pressing a finger against his own mouth.
“Calm down, please. Don’t shout. I want to show you something.”
Mohini, still drowsy and startled, nodded faintly. Nakul smiled with relief. “Follow me,” he murmured, his voice low, as though the night itself was listening.
They tiptoed out of the hut into the silver glow of the moon. Suddenly, something soft slipped over Mohini’s eyes, plunging her into darkness. She gasped, panic rising, and called out, “Nakul?”
“I’m here,” his calm voice reassured her immediately. His hands found hers, warm and steady, guiding her through the night.
Her voice trembled with unease. “Are you… are you going to kill me?”
Nakul chuckled softly, his laughter like velvet in the silence. “Perhaps,” he teased, “because you stole my place near Mata.” His tone was playfully indignant, but it made Mohini’s lips curve into a shy smile.
“I am sorry…” she whispered, playing along, though her heart was racing.
“Then at least give me my birthday gift before you kill me!” she added in mock despair.
Nakul laughed openly at that, shaking his head. “You will certainly get it. Just wait.”
Moments later, he finally removed the blindfold. Mohini blinked, and what she saw stole her breath away.
A waterfall, glistening under the pale moonlight, shimmered as if it were spun of silver and pearls. The water cascaded down into a pool that mirrored the stars above, creating a vision so surreal it seemed like a dream.
Her eyes widened in wonder. “It’s… so beautiful,” she breathed.
But Nakul’s gaze was not on the waterfall. It lingered on her face, illuminated by moonlight, every feature touched with a glow that made his chest ache. “There is more,” he said gently, taking her hand. He led her to a flat rock beneath an old tree, its branches bowing like guardians over them.
He disappeared for a moment and returned with something wrapped carefully in leaves.
“What is it?” Mohini asked curiously, her voice hushed in reverence of the night.
He unwrapped it slowly, and her eyes widened again. Within lay delicate ornaments jewelry woven entirely from jasmine flowers, their fragrance intoxicating in the cool night air.
Mohini gasped softly, touched beyond words. Nakul’s fingers trembled slightly as he lifted her hand, adorning her with the blossoms. One by one, he placed them upon her wrists, her hair, her ears, and neck decorating her like a goddess bathed in moonlight.
Her eyes glistened as she whispered, “Nakul…” but no more words came.
He only smiled, then brought forward a small bundle of her favorite fruits. “What?” he asked when she looked at him in surprise. “Did you think I would forget?”
Mohini shook her head with a tender smile. “I am just… happy to have you in my life.” Her gaze lingered in his, unguarded and honest.
Heat rose to Nakul’s cheeks, but he handed her the fruits silently. She began eating, then offered him some. When he refused, she plucked a grape and pressed it teasingly to his lips.
