Chapter 4

"Scarlett, gather all the information you can get on the Western Bond pack," Blaise barked out orders as soon as he got back to the pack house. All his words were jumbled into one big blob in my mind. There were only two words that stood out prominently in my mushy brain. Western Bond.

I thought I would never go back to that heart wrenching place. I thought I was finally free from my past. I thought he would not affect my life anymore. Well, apparently that dark shadow still lurked in the corner of my heart, mind, and soul.

"-ria. . . Aaria!" Blaise bellowed. I dropped all the files I had in my hand in shock and spun around hastily to face him.

"Damn it, Aaria! I can't have you spacing out!" He exclaimed, yanking me from my deep thoughts, and harshly throwing me back into reality. All the files were scattered on the floor and my hands were trembling from the impact of his demanding tone. Everyone froze for a second as if time had stopped and some of the younger members cowered in fear.

"Why have you been so out of it since. . ." His words faded and then as if the puzzles fitted together in his head, an understanding look crossed his face.

Blaise mumbled a few curse words to himself, and took a few deep breaths before speaking again. "Aaria come to my office please." He led me out of the living room, and before he closed the room's door he glared at the crowd of frozen people. His message was conveyed loud and clear. It undoubtedly warned them not to eavesdrop, and to start doing their jobs.

Blaise brought me to his study and plopped himself on his chair next to his desk. When he motioned his right hand signaling me to sit down on a chair, I noticed Blaise's shirt sleeve was soaked with blood and the red liquid trickled down his hand.

"Blaise! You're arm!" I was about to bolt out the door and get the emergency kit but he shot up and blocked my path. Even without any words exchanged his intense glare told me everything I needed to know. He wanted me to sit down and shut up, and unless I listened to him, he would not allow me to look at his wounds.

After I obeyed his orders, there were a few minutes of silence before he initiated our conversation. However, the whole time he was staring into my eyes intently.

"Look Aaria, I apologize if I shocked you, but you need to get your shit straightened up." He sighed and his eyebrows knitted together, "I know this may be the hardest quest you have ever faced, but I need you to be in top condition. I can't have what happened today occur again. I can't afford to risk all my crew's lives, and most importantly, I can't lose my second-in-command."

He paced back and forth in the room and rubbed his temples as if he had a migraine. He came to a halt after another moment of silence. With a determined look, he phrased his next words carefully, "Aaria, I'm sorry that I have to treat you like a newbie, but I have decided to keep you under watch. If you are not mentally or physically ready for this mission by the end of this week, I will take you out of this task."

I stared at him with my mouth gaping. I had to replay his words over and over again in my head before I finally came to terms with his decree.

His words and his lack of trust hurt more than any gun wounds I had ever received, even more than the time I was hunted down with a silver bullet. But as one of the leaders of this crew, I understood where he came from. Last time, I was the one who got him injured, and it was my mistake, but he didn't blame me. This time however, Blaise knew, he knew that we were going to spy on my old pack. He knew that some of my loyalties still laid there. He was worried that I wouldn't be able to do my job because of guilt.

It was true though. He knew me too well, probably because he had seen how much leaving the pack injured me inside and out. I had grown up in Western Bond. Even though I had experienced some horrible things there, the pack still held my family and my childhood friends.

He was still trying to protect me from harm even though he had enough things to deal with right now. For three years, I had never felt as though I was the weakest link in the crew, but right now I did. Deep in me I realized that the confidence I had built up over the years did not prepare me for the battle that was about to come. What would happen if I saw him again? Would it shred me into pieces and drive me up the wall until I became a despicable being again?

Blaise's soft tone pulled me out of the darkness that was about to consume me, "Please Aaria, understand where I'm coming from." He was lowering his own status in front of me. He didn't need to do that, but it showed a form of respect and a way of reassuring me that I was not the worthless shell I used to be.

That was when I threw all my pride away. I couldn't latch onto my ego, I needed to protect the people I cared for and not let them slip away. It might be hard to be watched over like a newbie, but it was for our own good. I couldn't endanger the people who supported me through my darkest hours.

Smiling, I regarded him with a light tone, "I understand Boss, now that this business is done, let me take a peek at your wounds before you bleed to death." Blaise sighed in relief and chuckled.

"Whatever you want mother wolf."

What he couldn't see was the turmoil that still boiled inside my body. It unsettled me, the thought of possibly going back to my old pack and meeting Lucas again.
