Dazai smirked as he stared out the window. He managed to anger Chuuya.
Again.
They were paired up on a mission. This was their third organized mission since Dazai left the port mafia.
Things between them became odd since the last mission in the Meursault.
To be fair, their relationship never was something that was considered normal to begin with, but Dazai felt like there was something that was left unsaid between them.
He would never admit it to himself, nor anyone else. However, he cared deeply about the short redhead. He cherished every moment they spent together, even if they were bickering all the time. He found something similar in the Detective agency, but it never felt quite like Chuuya's presence did.
After their mission in the Meursault Chuuya became different. He was a lot more careful about what he said to Dazai and Dazai could tell that he was holding back on his insults.
He looked tired.
Dazai glanced at the redhead next to him. Chuuya was frowning, tightly holding onto the stirring wheel.
"You should keep your mouth shut, Mackerel. I could throw you out of the car and let you walk to the hotel if that's what you'd prefer?" Chuuya mumbled in a menacing tone, his voice laced with tiredness.
Dazai rolled his eyes. Despite his wanting to continue messing with the redhead, he stayed silent. After all, the ex-demon prodigy didn't know how to drive, so he would have to walk to their assigned hotel.
Dazai sulked in his seat. He sighed and whined and Chuuya looked like he was barely holding himself from smacking the brunette, but he didn't say anything either.
The car drive was filled with silence. It wasn't necessarily awkward, it was mostly annoying. So when Chuuya parked in front of their hotel Dazai sighed and his mischievous smirk came back.
"Are the expenses covered by the generous Slug?" he asked sarcastically.
Dazai was aware that this was a strictly undercover mission and they couldn't afford to involve the Port mafia's or Ada's bank account in this.
They will pay with cash. Chuuya's cash, Dazai decided.
Chuuya rolled his eyes. He glared at Dazai
"I can't believe I agreed to this" he mumbled to himself and exited the car.
"Two rooms? Right. Allow me to check in our system." the receptionist said.
She looked hesitant, slightly worried despite trying to sound cheerful and unbothered. Dazai was already thinking about what this meant. He glanced at Chuuya, who had his eyebrow raised. He noticed it too.
Did she recognize them? No. That couldn't be the case. After all, Mori made sure that wouldn't happen.
He had non-permanently colored Chuuya's hair in black, they were wearing casual clothes and Dazai wore a long-sleeved shirt that was covering his bandages.
They looked like two random young men and didn't resemble what they were once known as Double Black.
Double Black.
Dazai was suddenly reminded of their old days. It's not like he never thinks about it. He thinks of it too often for his liking, but it felt different this time. Dazai couldn't put his finger on it.
To be more exact, he didn't want to.
They started working as partners again, after four years of not seeing each other. They didn't spend so much time alone together since they were teenagers.
