Lei P.O.V

I wake up creeping out of my room quietly, shuffling down the stairs and pass my snoring mother. I quickly jog to the kitchen and start making toast and eggs for my mom. Once they are finished, I set them down on the table near her.

"I love you mom..." I whisper quietly running up the stairs and throwing on some camo pants and a purple crop top with flowers on it. I am Lei... I am a mixed child. My father is African American and my mother is European. As you can tell my life isn't that good but I enjoy I as much as I can. I smile as I brush my hair back, putting a bow in it. I slide in my combat boots tying them and walk to the door, opening it. My mother stands there in anger as her hangover kicks in and she pushes me down.

"Where are you going!" She yells, towering over me.

"S-school m-ma'am" I manage to stutter and I gulp in fear, hoping she does no more. She stomps over to me grabbing a hand full of my curly hair, making me whine and trying to pull away.

"Stop squirming!" She yells furiously, slapping me across my face. I whimper and stop moving as my cheek is stained with her hand print, she looks down at me then let's go of my hair. "Go to school.." I nod as quickly as I can, not trying to hurt my stinging cheek and I grab my bag and run out the house. Hot tears roll down my face as I run to my bus stop. As I near it I wipe my tears and put a half smile on my face.

"Hey Zoe!" I yell as I run too my best friend.

"Hey Lei! What happened to your cheek?" She pokes my cheek and in whence. "I fell off my bed this morning and hit the corner of my dresser."

"Oh poor thing!" She laughs and smiles at me as I smile back weakly as it hurts my face. The bus pulls up and Zoe and I board it and sit in the far back talking about boys and stuff. No one can know about my mom... they would take her to jail. I will protect her because I love her...
