Red and blue lights lit up the otherwise dim street. An eery silence crept around the gas station that had become a crime scene following the shooting that had taken place that night. Nobody knew who it was or why it happened. The only thing they were sure of, was the tragedy that had occurred. One little girl, who had been there when the bullets flew, left the now windowless gas station in search of her other half. She found her, her little sister, underneath a metal bench that sat next to a newspaper dispenser. She was quietly crying and rocking. The little girl crouched to meet her sister's height.
Ruth: Ann? Mommy says it's time to go now
No answer. The little girl, Ruth, reached out for her sister's hand but was met with a swift pull away. Ruth glanced at her empty hand, which was covered in blood, before fully sitting on the ground next to Ann.
Ruth: I wanna go home please
Ann: N-no, I'm not going
Ruth: But why?
Ann: Cause this is my fort, I'll-I'll be safe here...
Ruth: Home is safe
Ann: No it's not...
Ruth: Why?
Ann: ...There are monsters there
Ruth: Mommy and daddy says we gots to leave
Ann: But...then we'll die too...
A flash of the night passed through Ruth's mind. One minute she, her little sister, and her big brother were getting snacks and the next, the girls were sobbing over their brother's lifeless corpse. They watched him get shot. They watched him fall to the ground. They watched him scream in pain. They watched him die. Then, they had to watch as the police took his body away. Two little girls were covered in their big brother's blood. Six and eight, that's how old these kids were, and eight was how old Jaylen would stay forever. Ruth started to wipe the tears that refused to stop falling. Her flushed cheeks and swollen eyes matched that of her sister's. Neither of them fully understood what happened or what to do now. All they knew is that this happened because of who they were.
Ruth: No-no we won't. Mommy and daddy are-are here now
Ann: They-they have those loud guns too! There are no guns in my f-fort!
Ruth: They have to protect us with them
Ann: Bubba al-always protected us...he never had a gun... I want bubba back...
Ruth: Me too, but daddy says he isn't coming b-back. He can't protect us anymore so now we have to do it
Ann: I'm not like-like him. I don't know how
Ruth: ...I'll protect you, but-but you have to protect me too, ok?
Ann: Like knights?
Ruth: Yeah, like from the movies bubba likes
Ann: But I'm scared Ruth
Ruth: I'm scared too. Knights can be scared
Ann: They can?
