(modern au. This is a long one)
"I'm scared to check the date, I'm scared of the dark
You can't escape it, no matter how fast the car
When you're hollow and I'm hollow
I act like it's a choice that I'm still single
I'm smaller than the raindrops on the window
I'm colder than the backside of a pillow
And I've tried to hold my temper and obscure my rage
But these kids, they never act their age
And I've got one foot in the grave"
-Hollow, Noah Kahan

You weren't sure quite where you were going, but it was far, far from there.
Your hands gripped the wheel of your car, knuckles aching as you resisted the urge to stop the car and cry, resisted the urge to scream and tear your hair out, resisted the urge to chuck your phone-blowing up with texts and calls from your boyfriend-out of the window.
He hadn't cheated on you. He would never. He hadn't lied, he hadn't been manipulating, he hadn't hurt you.
The light ahead of you turned red and you rested your head on the wheel for a moment.
'This isn't bloody fair,' you thought.
It was an unfair situation, really. His mother had never liked you, and when it came down to it he chose his family. Of course, if put in the same situation you would have as well, though maybe not in as much of a...hurtful way. You were typical "pureblood royalty:" Draco Malfoy's older sister who'd also been sorted into Slytherin but had what others chose to call "muggle sympathizing tendencies." People tiptoed around the topic and pretended the situation didn't exist but one truth was painfully evident.
You were well on the way to becoming a proper blood traitor.
You didn't care, not really. If you were still a naïve third year then you might've, but then fourth year rolled around and you met him.
Fred Weasley was a serial prankster, a class-A half-wit, and a prime example of the types of people your mother warned you to stay away from. He was also one of the most beautiful men you'd ever seen, though you fully intended to keep to your mother's advice. Then, one day a prank of his went awry and turned your hair bright purple rather than your brother's. Your ears had burned red and you stormed over to the red haired boy-apologising through hysterical cackles-and slapped him across the face, and then, as some might say, the rest was history.
Really, he spent the rest of the term trying to make it up to you with odd treats here and there while also seeking you out in corridors to tease you then dramatically back off and beg that you don't slap him again. At first, you'd threatened to hex him so much that you thought you might end up accidentally doing it, but as time went on you grew to quite like his company.
The two of you spent the remainder of the year sneaking off to have midnight flies and kiss in broom closets. Only George and Pansy knew, your two confidantes who singlehandedly made sure you two could do everything that you did. They became somewhat decent friends themselves, and though rumours spread as to why the Weasley twins were suddenly friendly with two random slytherin girls, nobody ever found out about you and Fred.
Your secret romance lasted three more years, making it through the Yule Ball (where you both went "alone" but shared an almost suspicious amount of dances), Dumbledore's army, and the opening of Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. You stood on the sidelines, making visits to the store only out of "curiosity" and not to admire one of the cute owners.
The mistake came when you decided that you wanted to meet his parents. After all, you and his family were already on rocky terms; you'd called Percy a stuck-up prat a considerable (and maybe excessive) amount of times before he graduated, found yourself teasing Ron every once in a while, and often defended Draco even when you knew he was awfully wrong and being a horrible person-he's your little brother, after all. You'd just graduated from Hogwarts and was considering officially detaching from your family to be with Fred and live a moral life. You'd finally told Draco about the situation and he'd only shrugged and told you that as long as you were alive he wouldn't care that you made one horrible choice.
