"Why are we here?" I grumbled, while dodging penises left and right. Wait, is the plural of penis penises or penii? Well whatever it was, I was dodging it. I mean I'm all for "Greek gods" or whatever, but why do their statues have to be naked? Besides, Greek gods are more of my best friend Percy's forte, he's always had some weird kinda bro bond with Mr. Brunner, our Latin teacher. I'm more into writing which is really hard considering I'm dyslexic, but every time I finish writing something, even if it's just a paragraph, I can't help but feel proud.
"Can you stop complaining for two seconds? Besides isn't the artist in you supposed to be loving this," Percy said while rolling his eyes.
"The artist is me thinking I've seen enough of the male genital to last me for life," I said, complaining.
"Are you sure this isn't the pessimist in you," he paused, then grinned mischievously "Sunshine." He started running off leaving me to chase after him. "Perseus Jackson!"
"Students!" Mr. Brunner said to grab our attention. I momentarily accepted loss, turning to give him my attention. That didn't last long. I mean one second I'm listening while drawing shapes one Percy's arms with my finger the next thing i know Nancy's making a bratty remark. Again! "Like we're gonna use this in real life. Like it's gonna say on our job applications, 'Please explain why Kronos ate his kids'."
"Don't worry Nancy you don't have a future. If you're lucky and I mean really lucky you could maybe pick up my trash for me." The whole class laughed while Nancy's face just got redder than her hair and trust me that was not a good look.
"Shut up orphan girl," she sneered. Yea cause that's an original comeback. I mean with the red hair and the dead mother, at this point I was just begging to be bullied. Anyway before I could say anything, I felt a hand on my fist. When I looked down I noticed the dark skin and knew it was Grover aka the pacifist of our group. I wouldn't say me and Percy are violent per say but sometimes you do need to solve the problem with fist. Taking a deep breath I calmed down and turned into Mr. Brunner
"On that happy note, it's time for lunch. Mrs. Dodds, would you please lead them outside?" As all of us kids started shuffling out the door towards lunch, I heard Mr. Burner call out for Percy. Turning around, I mouthed 'meet you outside'. Don't get me wrong, normally I would offer to wait for him or stand by the door, but as weird as it was, Mr. Burner had some kind of bro bond with Percy. It's not like Mrs. Dodds, our math teacher. Honestly the only thing cool about her is her leather jacket. I would totally steal it if I thought I could pull it off. As he nodded to me, I turned around and started looking for Grover. He was sitting by a water fountain trying to look like he wasn't part of the class. Trust me it didn't work. As soon as Grover saw my face, his seemed to light up. Chucking, I walked over and started to hand him my vegetables. While Percy loved to eat blue foods, I couldn't eat vegetables, we all have our weird food quirks. Not peppers, or squash, or zucchini, or anything! As I looked up, I saw Percy coming towards us to sit down.
"Detention," me and Grover asked at the same time, making us grin.
"Nah, not from Brunner. I just wish he'd lay off me sometimes. I mean-I'm not a genius."
"You got that right," I said, while smiling cheekily. Just as I had attended it too, Percy started laughing and nudged my shoulder. As me and Percy started talking about all the things we wanted to do this break, Nancy Bobofeit and her gang of clowns came over. Great. "Oops." Nancy said, as she dropped her sandwich in Grover's lap and one of her friend's yogurt in mine. I hopped up, trying to shake some of the yogurt off the skirt I was wearing. "Damn it Nancy!" I looked down trying to see if it was salvageable, when I heard Nancy scream, "Percy pushed me!"
Remember when I told you if Percy was in the principal's office I would be in the seat next to him? Well that's because of a promise we made, if one of us gets in trouble then the other one has to do something to get in trouble too. We do this to make sure we can always go to the same school. So the minute I heard Nancy scream I knew I had to act too or else they might only expel Percy. (The minute one of us uses violence, we always get expelled. Even though Nancy has gone to this school her whole life.) Turning around I punched Nancy straight in the eyes and sneered, "that's what you get for calling me 'Orphan girl'." Smiling, I walked to Percy and grabbed his hand, turning towards Mrs. Dodds, who seemed to have teleported over here.
"Hey don't worry Perce," I said, nudging him with my shoulder. "There's still three more schools left," I grinned sheepishly. We have got to start behaving better. "I know, but did you have to do that? I mean now you're gonna be in trouble," he said, while playing with his fingers trying to downplay how much he cared. "Hey don't worry bout me, I'll be fine, and besides what would seven-year-old me say if I didn't get in trouble with you?" Looking left, I saw him trying to keep himself from laughing, and I instantly felt better. Percy's my best friend, so when he's upset so am I.
"You two have been giving us problems," Mrs. Dodds said, in an ominous tone if I'm gonna be completely honest.
"Yes ma'am," Percy said, speaking for the two of us.
"Did you really think you would get away from us?" Okay I get that I punched someone, but why is she staring at me like I just stole her leather jacket? "We are not fools, Percy Jackson, Annie Mcnulty. It was only a matter of time before we found out about you. Confess, and you will suffer less pain." Okay did we do something else? I looked left at Percy to see if he knew what we did wrong and almost burst out laughing at his confused face. He looked like a cute kicked puppy dog!
"Percy Jackson, Annie Mcnulty, your time is up."
All of a sudden her fingers seemed to grow into claws and her awesome leather jacket melted into wings! My eyes widened instantly, I mean she looked like a huge bat! And then out of nowhere Mr. Brunner basically zoomed in on his wheelchair, shouted what ho, tossed Percy a pen, and left. Mrs. Dodds if she still even was that lunged at me and Percy as I grabbed his hand and started running towards the door. Then I kid you not she flew over and landed in front of the door, blocking our exit. "What are we supposed to do!" I screamed hoping that Percy would somehow know. When he didn't answer I looked left and saw that all of a sudden he was holding a huge sword.
"We fight."
Quickly looking around for a weapon, I turned around and noticed a bow and arrow. I grabbed it and said a quick prayer that this would work. Me and Percy both ran behind two statues opposite of each other. As she started walking in a slow menacing speed towards him I took a deep breath lined up the arrow and shot. Almost as if I was controlling it, the arrow went straight in her arm as I had planned. Mrs. Dodds screeched, turning around and running towards me at full speed. "Shit," I screamed, accidentally dropping the bow, while running away from her. White running, I locked eyes with Percy for two seconds and a plan instantly grew in my head. When I saw the discrete nod he gave me, I knew he saw it too. Picking up speed, I started running towards the statue where Percy was with Mrs. Dodds chasing after me. Changing tactics in one second, I slid to the ground as Percy stuck out his sword going straight through Mrs. Dodds waist.
What. the. hell.
