...
.....
A sudden warmth was all you felt. You could hear a soft ticking and whirring from somewhere... somewhere inside you.
Your eyes squinted open, adjusting to the bright light above. Blurry images came into view.
Someone was standing at your side."Hello? Are you... functioning?" A deep voice spoke up from the still-blurry figure.
"I... what?"
"Are you awake?"
"I think so." You said. Was that your voice?
"Oh good. I was worried I had done something wrong... again." The voice said. As you blinked a few times, the person beside you came into focus.
It was a tall... man? Who was dressed up in very colorful clothing, including a purple box surrounding his face. He looked odd, to say the least.
"Where am I?" You asked."Not to worry. You are in my toy shop. And you are my new assistant." The man said.
"Who are you?"
"I'm the Toymaker, of course."
"What-" you tried to sit up, but wobbled and fell onto your back where you laid.
"Don't pressure yourself to get up yet, assistant. You're still very new to this body."
"But... how... what am I?" You asked, voice feeling creaky.
"Everything will be revealed to you in good time. I have work to do. In the meantime, try and get used to everything. I know it's confusing, but you'll be fine. I'll be in the other room if you need me." The man who claimed he was called the Toymaker walked to the door. Before he left, he turned back around. "Do let me know when you're ready to begin." He said, and closed the door.
You blinked for a while at the now closed door. Your head hurt. Your body felt heavy. Speaking of your body... you looked down at yourself.
You were dressed in clothing equally as colorful as the Toymaker's. Your skin, if you could call it that, was a pale white... and hard. You raised your hands to your face, tensing and un-tensing your fingers. You felt to your head. Just like the Toymaker, it was encased in an odd geometrical helmet.
This was all so odd. Nothing felt right. You had this nagging feeling in your mind, like surely there was something before this. Surely this wasn't how you always were?
But the more you tried to remember, the more your head hurt. You tried to let it go. Taking a deep breath, you pushed yourself into sitting position. Immediately your head swam, everything going blurry for another moment. You gave yourself some time to adjust, and then, when you felt good and ready, you got to your feet. You shook a bit, but you could stand. You looked around to see where you were. Behind you, you realized that what you had been lying on was some kind of work table. Scattered around you were many various tools. Toymaker had said you were in his toy shop... this must be the workshop. You noticed a mirror on a nearby table, and you wobbled over to see it.
Bending in close, you took the first look at your face. Just like the arms you had examined moments before, it was a ghastly white, save for your nose and to little splotches on your cheeks, which were a peachy color. Your mouth looked like it was detached from the rest of your face. You stretched it and it creaked open and shut.
This was odd. All just too odd.
But clinging to the Toymaker's words, you hoped you would get used to it.
You gave yourself a few more minutes getting acclimated to your surroundings. Then, when you felt it was time, you went through the door that you saw Toymaker leave from."-You're welcome! Come again!" He said just as a man was leaving out the front door. A little bell tinkled.
Toymaker turned around with a smile, then jumped back when he noticed you in the doorway.
"Goodness! I hadn't expected you to be up and about so quickly.""Sorry." You said.
"That's alright. Um, how are you feeling?" He looked you up and down, almost like he was searching for errors.
"Fine, I think. But, why... why am I here?" You asked.
"I'll explain everything later. For now," he walked to the door and flipped his sign to 'closed', "it's time to rest."
Toymaker guided you through the workshop and down a hallway. He opened a door, revealing a small bedroom.
"This is where you'll stay." He said. You walked in, taking in everything around you. The bed, covered in a thick purple blanket, was just big enough for you. The walls were grey, and there was one window that looked out on a street littered with other shops. It was night outside. You hadn't realized how late it was. Suddenly the tiredness caught up with you. You sat on the bed.
"I hope you'll be comfortable here, since we'll be working together. Come to me in the morning and we'll get started, alright?" Toymaker said.
You nodded.
He nodded back, giving you a small smile, and closed the door.
You laid down, trying your best to take in everything that had happened since you woke up.
Who was this Toymaker? He seemed nice enough, but something definitely felt off. But from what you could infer... he made you.
You supposed you owed it to him to play along.
You closed your eyes, hoping to fall asleep quickly. Eventually, you drifted out of consciousness.
