You woke up that morning, the happenings of last night slowly coming back to you.
You shivered.
What Peter was doing... it was dangerous. But you knew he had a good purpose. A good heart.
You tried not to let your thoughts get the best of you, shaking your head and preparing yourself for the day.
You went out into the workshop to find Peter already well awake.
"Good morning." You said. He looked up and gave a crooked smile.
"Ah, good morning Y/N. Did you... get some rest?"
You nodded.
"That's good." He said as he came over to where you were standing. "Listen, I'm very sorry about the... roughness of last night. I hope you can forgive me."
You looked down at your feet.
"I hadn't meant for you to see that- not yet that is! I promise I would've told you eventually, I was just looking for the right time and-"
"It's ok. I understand." You said.
"You... you do?"
"Of course."
"Well, that's good." His thoughts seemed to shift.
"Oh, take a look at what I'm working on!" He guided you over to the table, where you saw carefully crafted pieces of a toy not yet put together.
But as you looked closer, you noticed... it was pieces of the toy you had drawn!
You smiled. "Did you do this... for me?"
"Why yes! I needed a new project to get started on anyway, so I figured this was as good as any. Now we can put them together! I hope you'll help me."
"It's what I'm here for, isn't it?" You said in a joking tone.
"Ah, I suppose so." He said.
"Now, if you'll just sit here, I'll show you what to do."
You did as he said, and he handed you a face piece that looked like he had sculpted it by hand.
"You made this?" You asked, already knowing the answer. You turned the face piece over in your hands, feeling its smooth texture.
"Yes, especially for this project I might add!"
"Gee... they don't call you the Toymaker for nothing." You mused.
He let out something that sounded a bit like a choke and a laugh.
"You flatter me." He said.
"So... what do I need to do?"
"I'd like you to paint it, if you could."
You looked over and saw that he had placed out some paints and brushes.
"All of the limbs and pieces that don't have clothes covering them, I need you to add some color to."
"That sounds like something I can do." You smiled.
"I'm sure you can." Peter said. And with that, you got to work. It looked like he would be more focused on the machinery parts of the toys, which was probably good, since you weren't entirely sure what to do with that.
The two of you worked together in silence. You were happily painting away, gently setting each piece aside to dry as you finished them. As you worked, you caught glimpses of the Toymaker's face turned toward you... but when you tried to look up to see if he needed something, he would always turn back to his work. You thought nothing of it.
By the time you were done, it looked like he had finished his work as well.
"Why don't we give those some time to dry?" He said. "Let's go and open up shop." You nodded.
The two of you went to the front of the shop and Peter switched the sign.
He asked you to do a couple simple tasks; sweeping up, putting some dolls out on the shelves. After about an hour some customers finally came in.
"Well hello! What can I do for you little ones?" The Toymaker looked down at the girl and boy.
You listened in. The girl shyly nudged the boy, and he spoke up. "We're looking for toys, but we don't know what we want." He said.
"Oh, well, I'm sure we can help you with that!"
You were about to go back to organizing, but then you heard Peter say "Y/N, would you like to help them?"
"M-me?"
"Sure!"
"Um..." you looked at the kids. They seemed nice enough. Hopefully you could properly help them with whatever they were looking for.
"What is it you'd like?"
"I want something that's fast!" The little boy said.
Well that's easy enough.
You looked around, then spotted the tin toys.
"How about a tin car or train?"
He thought for a second, but shook his head.
"Hmm..." you pondered. Then you had another idea.
"How about a kite? They can go really fast in the air!" You said. The boy's eyes lit up.
"Yeah!"
And with that, you brought a red and blue kite to the counter. Then you felt a tug on your shirt. You looked and saw the girl standing by you.
"Oh yeah, my sister wants something too." The boy said.
"And what do you like little missy?" You said, trying to be non-threatening. But she wouldn't speak.
"I think she likes animals." The boy piped in.
"Animals, huh?" You said, looking at your variety of stuffed animals.
You picked one out. "How about... a little kitty?"
She stared at it for a second, but shook her head.
"Hm." You put it back, looking for something else. You took out another one.
"A giraffe?"
Again, she shook her head.
Maybe one more try.
"How about... this sweet unicorn?" You held the animal out to her. She gasped happily and grabbed it, hugging it close. Score.
"Thank you." She murmured.
"No problem, hon. Now why don't we ring those up for you?" You said, and she gently handed you the unicorn.
You went back behind the counter and rung them up. The little boy handed you some crumpled up money from his pocket. It was just enough.
"Alright, you're good to go! Hope you have a good day!"
"Thank you!" The boy shouted as they left the store.
You felt content with how the exchange went. You turned to say something to Peter, but stopped short when you saw him grinning at you.
"What?"
"Nothing, nothing." He said. "It's just... I'm proud of you."
You were a little taken aback by his comment. Proud? You felt that same prideful feeling swell in your chest and couldn't help but blush a little.
"Thank you." You said.
The two of you took turns tidying up and attending to customers the rest of the day. It all flew by, and before you knew it the day was done.
Peter closed up the shop, and the two of you went back into the workshop.
"It's been a long day, hasn't it?" He said. You nodded in agreement.
Peter looked over to the table where you two had been working that morning.
"Looks like the pieces are dry by now." He said.
We can work on that later... for now, I think it's time we had some well deserved rest."
You agreed, and you both headed to your respective rooms.
"Goodnight Peter." You called from your room.
"Goodnight." You heard back as you closed your door.
What would the next day have in store for you?
