Chapter One: Anubis, Protector of Graves.
My name is Millie Baker, and here I am, sitting at my father and mother's funeral.
My parents had died in a train accident, the train derailing off a cliff and... You can imagine the rest. It was open casket because the church thought it would "help take their souls to heaven" or something like that. I don't get it, my parents weren't that great of people.
People say I have my mom's hazel eyes, and my dad's cinnamon locks, but I think they're only being nice because I'm an orphan now. I heard a story once about an egyptian god called Anubis. He watches over and protects graves or something like that. I don't remember. I hope he's watching over them.
I took a taxi after the funeral. A family friend of ours, Yusuf. He lets me ride for only 1.25, instead of the usual 3.00. I got home with the keys my dad gifted to me before they left on their trip and opened the door. Now, mind you, I'm only 12. I can't just live on my own. But I don't think foster care is for me, so I gotta find some way to get out of this small ass town.
I packed a backpack full of things I thought I would need just in case I had to make a quick escape out of there. I don't wanna be stuck here like little orphan Annie.
But before we get into the stakes, my story.
I was born on Groundhog Day, here in Gilbert, Arkansas. Pretty small here, you see the same people every day. And sadly, I was born ginger, so I would be bullied more than I already was for being so quiet. My parents were loving to me, but they fought a lot. That's why they went on that trip. To try to fall in love again.
They only stayed together for me.
But, maybe Anubis is watching over them.
I think about this as I pack my bags. Phone, charger, food, hoodies, and sweats, and 20 dollars to spare. That probably won't get me far, but it's all I had leftover from my allowance. That'll get me some food and a ride on a train out of this small town.
