The ground had been covered in a new layer of snow during the night so the boys went out to shovel, leaving the girls inside cuddled up on the couches in front of the fire place, mugs of hot cocoa clasped between their hands. Rein was shuffling through movies, looking for a specific one to watch when the boys came back inside as Amoretta held her mug close to her body and listened to the crackling of the fire.
"Did he say he had Miracle on 34th Street?" Rein asked as she scanned to names of the countless movies Dolan had in a case next to the fireplace. "That's my favourite old Christmas movie," she mumbled before looked back at Amoretta. Amoretta pointed to a stack of black-and-white DVDs on top of another glass case full of movies to the other side of the fireplace. Rein got up and searched the stack. Amoretta glanced out the window and noticed the boys were almost finished shovelling.
She stood and placed her mug on the coffee table saying, "I'm gonna go make the boys some hot cocoa, they're almost done outside." Rein nodded with a small "mhmm" and Amoretta made her way to the kitchen. She filled the kettle with water, put it on the stove, and looked out of the window above the sink as she leaned against the counter. The untouched snow in the backyard glistened in the sun. She smiled to herself. She loved the winter, especially the snow, and Dolan's house seemed like the perfect place to spend the winter season. His house made you feel so welcomed and warm. Amoretta loved it and wondered why Dolan felt weird in the house alone.
Amoretta turned, thinking she heard someone call her. She waited a few seconds to listen if anyone would call her again. When no one did, she turned back around and waited for the water to boil in the kettle.
"Amy." She turned around again and looked for the owner of the voice. She could have sworn someone had called her that time. Although the voice was soft, she heard it clearly. "Amy." She got up from the spot she was leaning on the counter and made her way to the kitchen doorway. Sticking her head out, she saw Rein in the living room setting up a movie on the flat-screen hanging on the wall over the fireplace.
"Did you call me?" Amoretta asked. Rein looked at her and shook her head. "You sure?"
"I think I'd know if I called you," Rein replied, busying herself again with the television. Slightly confused, Amoretta retreated back to the kitchen just as the kettle started to whistle. She turned off the stove, got mugs for the boy's hot cocoa, and mixed everything together. Just as she entered the living room with the new steaming mugs of hot cocoa, the boys came in through the door, cheeks bright red from the cold outside.
"Oi!" Rein complained. "Close the door quick, it's freezing!" She grabbed a blanket from the couch and wrapped it around herself, taking a seat. Adrienne rolled his eyes at his friend and shut the door. Him and Dolan took off their boots and jackets, grabbed a mug of the steaming cocoa, and joined the girls.
Adrienne chose to lay across the girl's laps and Dolan laid by himself on the adjacent couch, sipping his beverage. Adrienne covered himself with a blanket and Rein began the movie. They had a good time just sitting with each other and watching a movie. It had been a long time since all of them had been together like they were.
Amoretta could have sworn she heard someone calling her a few times during the movies . . .
