Trouble

Your POV

"You were just the kid I thought I didn't have to worry about." She says, ticking her tongue crossly as she beckons me to sit in a chair in front of her desk. "You've been homeschooled your entire life and on the first day of schoolI catch you skipping class and smoking?" She places a palm on her forehead and scrunches up the strands of her that fall onto her face from her parted hairstyle. Shit. I was just starting to like her too. I had only had her for my second period, calculus, and for the nitwit teachers at this school, she was kind of smart. She actually seemed to have a passion in what she teached and she had been impressed when I knew what she was currently teaching. For all my homeschooledness, I had been quite the rebel in Africa.

As soon as I could I was sneaking out. I'd hitch rides from the other members of the facility and go into town. I had older friends and despite being kind of a bookworm, I knew how to have fun. Both of my parents never realized that I would sneak out at ungodly hours of the night to go out on the nearest city, even if I had just barely been sixteen. When all of the people around you are either much younger or much older, you have to either grow up faster or not. And so when Aaron offered to provide me with cigarettes, I couldn't help but latch onto the opportunity to smoke.

I'm not a bad kid. I work hard and I study hard but I can't help it if I want to party hard too.

"You're not a bad kid." She sighs, almost as if reading mind, as she pushes her glasses slightly forward on her nose bridge. "You're freakishly smart and from what I've seen, you were working on some pretty outstanding research about the hierarchy in lion prides in Africa, for a sixteen year old." I hold back a smile. I'm supposed to act all sad and act all sorry but at the mention of my work, I can't help but feel proud. I was good at what I did. I knew that, my parents knew that and even some math teacher in hick town USA knew. God I sound like a brat. "So I don't want to do anything rash and let this dumb-" She looks at me and forces me to make eye contact. "Very dumb mistake affect the rest of your life." What is she saying? "So I won't tell the school about this. Or your parents." Shit am I getting off scot-free? Good, because my parents would have totally fucking killed me if I was suspended for smoking on the first fucking day. Holy shit. "But you have to do two things for me." She warns and I nod feverishly.

"Anything." I say quickly as she stands up from her chair.

"First, promise not to do anything like this again." At school I won't, no ma'am.

"Promise. Cross my heart and hope to die." I say grinning and she rolls her eyes at my antics. I can tell we are going to get along.

"And second, I have a student who took the diagnostics test for Algebra ll today and failed miserably. In fact, she's been failing the whole time she's been here.I need your help to tutor her." She starts before I interrupt her.

"Easy, done." I say and extend my hand for us to shake on it.

"Uh uh, not so fast. The reason she's still failing is because no one wants to tutor her, and the tutors she's had have not lasted a week." She warns and I can't help but not care. Oh come on, how hard can it be to teach someone Algebra? It's literally the easiest part of math.

"I can do it, Miss Norbury. How bad can it be?" I say confidently and she raises her eyebrow at me in doubt.

"Alright if you're so sure of yourself." She shakes my hand and smiles, a bit mischievously. "School has been over but you can approach Regina George tomorrow."

"Come again?" I say choking on my spit.

"Good luck Miss Heron." She smiles as she leaves her classroom, turning off the lights with just me inside of it.

Shit. What did I just get myself into?
