“Today is the day.” Enya thought as she sat up in bed, her jet black hair cascading down her shoulders as she rubs her temples. She groggily gets out of bed and walks to her closet, she grabs a green shirt, a pair of black pants and her favorite brown vest. She puts her hair into a high ponytail and makes her way to the bathroom down the hall. “Please may luck be on my side today.” She mumbles as she splashes water on her face, then begins to brush her teeth. “Enya!” A feminine voice calls from downstairs, “Get down here this instant.” She quickly wipes her mouth to get rid of any toothpaste surrounding her mouth. “Enya!” A deep male voice now hollered, “I’m coming!” Enya yelled, annoyed, “So much for luck.” She muttered under her breath as she walked down the stairs. “Are you finally ready?” The woman asked as she opened the door to leave the house, “Yes mother.”
The family heads over to the center of the city were every other family was gathering for the raffle, every other year there’d be a raffle to decide who would end up going out beyond the wall, it was basically a sacrifice so everyone would have enough food for the winter. Everyone was talking amongst one another as if multiple people weren’t about to be thrown out the wall with little supplies to survive the best they can and end up dying just so others could have food instead of growing more food, yet then again it was a tradition that we have all excepted as there was nothing we could do. The higher ups only saw this raffle as a game, sometimes they’d rig it to get rid of people who they thought were trying to overthrow them. Everyone goes quiet as the highest of all came up to the podium, and by highest I don’t mean in just power, I mean just the way she’d act. Sometimes people would wonder if her having schizophrenia was just a cover up. “Good moring everyone! Today is such a lovely day isn’t it?” She had exclaimed in a cheery voice, “Either she’s ‘schizophrenic’ right now, or she’s finally lost her last small braincell. No better than the infected.” Enya snickered to herself, thankfully no one had noticed. “Let's begin the raffle, can all citizens 15-30 please come on up and draw a slip of paper from the back box.” All of the people slowly made their way to the podium dreading what may come, one by one we all grabbed a slip of paper and once we all had one we shared a look upon one another and slowly opened the paper. “Please no dot, please no dot….” She looks down at her paper to see, “No… No. No!” A young fragile 15 year old girl says, she looks around and frantically walks up to each person who didn’t have a dot, hoping someone would trade with her, yet anyone who would have a brain wouldn’t take her slip. Enya could tell the girl wouldn’t last a day but wouldn’t trade with her, well she thought she wouldn’t until a small young boy who was maybe around 3 ran up to what must’ve been his sister as he cried. “Don’t leave me sissy! Please, I don’t want to be alone!” Enya felt pity for the child so she walks up to the girl and trades her paper, “What are you-?” The girl was interrupted by the old crazy woman, “Oh? What’s this, a person has actually traded their paper for the first time in history?” Enya glared daggers at the old fool, before anything could be said the people that had the dots were guided into a room with backpacks, small supplies for each one, and a 8 inch hunting knife and small 9 mm handgun. Enya was thankful her mom didn’t make her wear a dress today since it seemed there was no change of clothes for them.
“Grab what is given to you and meet in the room ahead of you, now!” Everyone quickly grabbed all the things that were provided and made their way to the second room. They all had time to get to know one another as it’d be smarter to work and stay together, although there was this one guy that gave Enya a weird feeling. The guards walked them out a mile from the wall, “Keep walking, if you ever come back to the wall you will be executed. Remember, fortune favors the brave.” The group, minus Enya, looked at the guards in shock. Once the guards were out of sight they all began to panic and wonder how they were going to survive for more than a week. Enya knew they had every right to panic too as she watched them get picked off by walkers or each other one by one, it was soon just her and a boy around her age. “Enya…. There are clicks up ahead…” The boy whispered to not attract any attention to them, Enya listened and indeed heard the clicks he was talking about. “How many do you think there are?” He shrugs, “Maybe 3 at the very least.” Enya nods her head, she begins to look around thinking of a plan. “I’m gonna distract them, you take them one at a time okay.” The boy nods his head and does as he was told. Everything was going as planned, Enya walked over to the boy and right as they met in the middle the floor gave out under them to reveal these massive infected people who were at least 6 '5 and huge. “Holy-!” The boy tried to reach out for something to grab onto, he was able to grab onto a board only for one of the 6 '5 infected to grab onto his ankle and drag him down. Enya climbed up as she watched on in horror, the last person in her group was finally dead, she was about to stand up but was pinned to the floor by one of her own infected group members from the past, they wrestle on the ground and soon she quickly gained the upper hand and finished them off. “Stupid infected….” She said as she was out of breath, she quickly checked herself for any bite marks and with her luck had a clear, fresh, bleeding bite mark on her right arm. Enya began to hyperventilate, she was terrified, after so long of being able to survive had gone to waste. She walks out of the building and into a tree high up and sits on a branch, “Why now, why? What did I do to deserve this?” Her vision begins to blur as tears roll down her cheeks, “This world is cruel, why should I have to go through this?” She thinks as the world around her turns into a dark blur and the sounds of nature mix together. Before she completely passes out she hears a female voice call out from below, “There’s someone up here! I need help over here!”
