It was late. The sun began to bid its farewell to the northern hemisphere, taking her light along to bless the other side of the world. Though its direct light was gone the heat of a summer night was as prevalent as ever. The humidity was heavy in the air sticking on like a second skin, much to the dismay of a blonde proprietress sitting on her roof. Her hand fan seemingly used for display only. Elizabeth Caledonia, or Ashe as you'll only know her, unsuccessfully fended off the heat in her cheap beach lounging chair atop her small, cozy mansion. Even though she spent her entire life in the Arizonian desert she could never get used to the Arizonian heat. Her shirt had long ago been unbuttoned in hopes of cooling her now glistening pale skin, which was also in vain. She lazily looked over at the cause of her pain. Soft indigo skin loosely covered in unnamed extravagant threads sitting at a tiny table that Bob carried up here at her request. Her head turned to the horizon, drinking in the final dregs of hopeful sunshine. Purple-stained stained inky hair that threatened to reach the ground spilled over her shoulders in waves. Her small hands cupped a glass of whatever liquor she craved at the moment. Ashe could almost get lost in her picture if it wasn't for the sweat that tried to blind her every other blink. She almost felt bad for speaking up to interrupt the image in front of her.
"Can't we go back inside yet Amelie?" She half whined in her direction. Painfully slowly her wife turned away from the spot she was fixated on. Her vibrant amber eyes glowed almost brighter than the forgotten sun hidden behind the earth. Amelie froze for a moment upon seeing the condition of her beloved before a ghost of a smile crossed her face. A warm feeling spread throughout Ashe's body as she did so. Any more heat and the blonde might've melted right into her seat. "I'm dyin' over here."
"I see that." She seemed content with watching her suffer for a moment longer before she stood up and slyly walked over to her overheated partner. "I forget the heat affects you so." Almost absentmindedly their hands found their way to one another as they often did. "I almost wish it affected me that way too." It was presented as a joke, something she began doing more often, but Ashe saw the almost pained expression in her eyes after it left her mouth. A sly grin worked its way onto Ashe's face as an idea popped into her mind.
"I can show you." Amelie had no time to be surprised as she was tugged into the arms of her other half. Leaving them hugging tightly on top of cheap plastic. A giggle escaped the blue woman as she adjusted to be more comfortable.
"Mm, you are burning up." She rested her head on her chest and wrapped her arms around Ashe's waist. "You're lucky I love you, this sweat is disgusting." Another small laugh reverberated through both of them.
"Yeah, well, you wanted to spend time out here, this is your fault the way I see it." Ashe relaxed her head looking up at the blossoming night sky. A soft silence settled over them as they enjoyed each other's presence.
"I just enjoy watching sunsets with you," Amelie spoke into her chest as she nuzzled further into the embrace. Ashe was almost moved by how adorable and almost childlike the confession felt to her ears. A kiss to the crown of Amelie's head was her response. She knew Ashe was no good with heartfelt talks and confessions, she grew accustomed to the physical affirmations that would follow whatever sappy thing Amelie said to her. More comfortable silence followed as they continued to lie there.
The ambiance of the night surrounded them. The distant sound of car engines that were overshadowed by the loud buzzing of cicadas and the occasional random animal served as their backdrop as the sky continued to darken.
"You're so cool." Ashe hugged her tighter as if her body could take away the heat.
"You know," Amelie sat up and wrapped her hands around her current seat's neck. "We can always just go back inside. Cool down with the state-of-the-art air conditioning instead of using me as your personal ice cube?" She eyed the woman waiting for an answer.
"...but I like my personal ice cube." A slightly amused puff of air left her as Amelie began to slip off of Ashe. "Oh, okay fine!" As Amelie stood up she was scooped up back into Ashe's arms. She looked up at her captor with an annoyed glare as they began moving to the staircase that led back inside. "Don't give me that look. I know you love me, my little blueberry."
"Do not call me that!" She half scolded half laughed as she playfully punched Ashe's shoulder, which prompted a laugh from her as she continued walking. The cold air hit her in a wave; almost too cold. It was like taking the first sip of water after days of dehydration. Bob, who was standing at attention at the bottom of the stairs, followed behind them as they moved through the large house. Even though neither of them needed protection anymore, Bob was always more than helpful to his two surrogate daughters.
Reaching the threshold of their room Ashe clumsily fumbled with the knob before pushing it open. Getting to their bed Ashe dropped both of them onto the soft sea of sheets and blankets. Almost as soon as she hit the mattress Amelie sat up next to Ashe. "I'm going to shower before bed." She kissed the tip of her pale nose before slipping off of the bed and starting her pre-shower ritual. Ashe waited to hear the door close and the water starts running before changing into clean pajamas and sprawling over the large bed.
A long time later her wife exited the connected bathroom with slightly damp hair and a silk nightdress. Crawling in the bed beside her she was stopped by Ashe speaking up.
"You're gonna hate me." Amelie raised a thin eyebrow.
"Pourquoi? "
"I'm cold." Amelie threw a pillow at her face before snuggling up to her temperature sensitive partner.
