family matters & hot chocolateMARIE SCHUMACHER was a young girl with a pretty face and a beautiful smile. That was both a gift and a curse because — as much as she tried to understand what psychological mechanisms played in the human mind — good-looking people were always noticed, attracted attention. They are being seen, which is important for her career. To be noticed. Even if she wished it was purely based on talent ( which she was confident and sure she had, 100% ), she couldn't deny that in the world she lived in, her beauty had helped her being noticed by teams and important people.
The curse of being beautiful? More like curses. She often felt the lingering lusting eyes of the vultures around her, predators ready to make their move if she showed any sign of weakness — which thanks to her talent and passion for racing didn't often appear, as her determination could be scary to men with a big weak ego. The other problem? She was seen outside, but people couldn't care less about her mind, her dreams, her heart . . . they only cared about her beauty. And the problem is that she didn't even try to look beautiful because her only worry was winning races, she was just a natural, the type of woman that would attract the lust of men and the envy of women who wished to look like her. But she didn't want any of it.
Marie had a complex character that only her family knew, the people in her life who truly cared about her as a person and not a beautiful decorative object. She had different shades, different . . . faces, theatre masks ready to be used according to the situation so that she could protect herself. I guess that is one of the consequences that came with being picked as a beautiful flower, especially because after little time they have been taken from the soft ground ( which is their home ), beautiful flowers become ugly and then they die.
So, being constantly misunderstood and not taken into consideration in matters of intelligence by men, Marie came to the conclusion that they could never and would never try to understand her. And in the racing world, as much as she showed pace, talent and good results, she was never going to be picked for her talent, but only for her beauty. And that was okay ( not really but who could change the common mentality? ) as long as they gave her a car with which she could deliver results. She wanted her name to be carved in the championship trophy and let history be the judge of her persona since the people around her were incapable of that.
1989 was a successful year: she won the Euro Formula 3000, the last step before reaching Formula One. And now came the problem: was some team going to pick her as their driver or reserve driver for the 1990 season? She won the championship in September, but by the end of November she didn't hear from any Formula One team so she began looking around in Endurance and Rally.
