The Room: A Short Story

I stared at the manor. Its looming posture, its black, dark eyes, its ravaged appearance. As lightning flashed behind it, the house seemed to emit a dark majesty with the background. I cautiously walked along the grey path, surrounded by the rotten vegetables and gargoyles, the witnesses of the crimes committed in this once-prestigious house. Before I knew it, I reached the brown, oak door with the brass eagle head on it, its eyes baring into my own, and with a faltering hand, I opened it.

It was dark. I couldn't see anything. Luckily, I had a flashlight. With a quivering hand, I turned it on. The ray of luminous, white light shooting through the corridor (I could now see) made it more mysterious and eerie. I gingerly placed my steps on the old, dusty floorboards. I looked at the old, dusty paintings of past kings, counts and dukes. Golden, once glorified statues of leopards, jaguars and tigers lined the corridors. I heard a pounding, coinciding with the blood rushing to my ears. 'Why am I scared?' I thought to myself. After all, it's just a house.

I then walked up the dusty, wooden steps. And then I saw a shadow flicker, rushing away as fast as it came to my periphery. I continued my exploration upstairs, my thoughts being the only sounds to comfort me while I was lone

It looked abandoned, or more abandoned than this house. It had a rotten, wooden door and a brass doorknob. I, blinded by my youthful curiosity, walked towards the room and opened it.

It was very barren and tiny. It had only one chair in it and a glass window was across the room from me. I crept towards the lone chair. Why was it there? A million questions came over me. Suddenly, the door slammed behind me. I whizzed around. It locked itself!! I was trapped! 'What's going on!?' I asked myself in a franticness. Then I heard it. An ear-splitting screech. I started feeling dizzy. My heart was beating faster than ever before. I tried to block it out but it didn't work. I collapsed to the floor in agony. Suddenly, the windows burst open and the glass shattered into tears. The cold air washed over me. Abruptly, the floor under me disintegrated. I screamed as I fell into the darkness. But no-one could hear me. Not anymore. Because I was in the abyss. And there I will lay forever.
