I tucked my hair behind my ear while greeting everyone in gryffindor. We were in the common rooms after we had been placed, and i was so nervous. My cheeks were probably flushed. I didn't really know anybody there, my mum was a witch but my father was a muggle. I love my father, but I have to admit, I felt a little shame to be half muggle..I heard how they talked to the others, the things they said. Don't get me wrong, a lot of people in hogwarts are half muggle born, but sometimes there's people that just make you feel bad about it. Like you don't belong.
Growing up, my mum didn't really talk about her background, she was kind of distant at times. When my mum attended Hogwarts, she got caught up in some trouble her 6th year in, and well.. they kicked her out of the school. Her parents, we're really disappointed. Some of her family felt shame upon them. She felt guilty because of this and didn't bother talking about being a witch after that incident. She moved to the states and that's when she met my father. They moved back to England, where my mum is from and stayed there permanently.
Every once in awhile, we visit my father's family and they visit us. But most of my life, I grew up pretty normal. After my letter had arrived, I had so many questions. My mother had a hard time shopping with me but she was happy to do so. My father didn't really push my mom into talking about her experience, so he didn't ask questions. However, when we went shopping for my things, he freaked out. He was pretty excited, a little more than me. My younger brother was a few years younger than me but he was excited to wait for his letter after I received mine. He didn't really have a good sense of what it was, but he knew he got to go to this big school.
Back in an England, I had 3 really good friends. We got along and went to the same school. After I received my letter, I couldn't really talk to them that much. I told them I had to go to a boarding school and so they understood. I knew that eventually we would lose our friendship since I'd be gone for so long. I figured I'd write to them every so often, but I had the mindset that I needed to start making new friends at Hogwarts. Like I mentioned before, I have a younger brother and so that makes me the oldest. Being the oldest and attending a new school, without any people you know, well.. it's scary. But I felt determined.
When I introduced myself, I didn't really know what to say. Most of my conversations ended short, I mean I was 12, what could I possibly talk about. When I talked to Hermione, she seemed nervous like me. She didn't look like she had any friends, and it's probably because others were intimidated by her. I know I was. I liked her hair though. It was frizzy, but it made me laugh. We joked around and I felt like I had made my first friend. I looked around and saw a ginger looking boy with 3 older ones behind him. They all looked alike. I figured they were siblings. 2 of them looked almost identical. Then I saw a shorter skinnier boy with brown hair and round glasses. He looked familiar.. I remember my mother telling me a story about a kid who defeated a great dark wizard, but I didn't think it could have been him.
"Oh that's Harry Potter" said Hermione, seeing what I was staring at.
"Oh" I relied. Hermione looked back, "I fixed his glasses, you know"
I turned to look at her, "how?"
She showed me her wand in her hand, "with a spell. Do you know any spells?" She asked.
I paused to think, "I know a few. My mum taught me some last year"
She looked curious to know more, "is both your parents wizards?"
I sighed, "no, my dad is a muggle"
She smiled, "that's okay, both of my parents are muggle born"
I raised my eyebrows, "really? Then how do you know your spells?"
She laughed, "I like to read silly. I spent my whole summer preparing for this year. Do you like reading?" She asked.
She seemed to know a lot.. I felt nervous, because I wasn't nearly as smart as her. "I do like reading. I read fiction most of the time, but nonfiction is good too. I don't prefer reading any science fiction, not really my thing"
She giggled and covered her mouth with her hand, "your funny"After she laughed, one of the ginger boys called everyone in a circle. "Everyone, let's settle down. Now I know your all excited to spend your first night here at Hogwarts but we should all know some rules before we head off to bed. There's no sneaking out after lights are off and no leaving your rooms, unless it's the bathroom. We will find out if you sneak out or try to get into some funny business. Now, we usually turn off lights by 10:30, so you have 10 minutes to put your things away and get ready for bed. Also, my name is Percy Weasley, I'm your prefect".
"Funny business? Who would get into some funny business? We're not children Percy" said one of the tall identical gingers.
Percy sighed and rolled his eyes before walking away.I didn't really know anybody's names at the time but I was excited to get to know them. The boys headed up one staircase and the girls went the opposite way.
The next morning everyone was so excited for class. The older years already knew the routine but they were exited to mess with the younger ones. I put on my burgundy striped tie and my gray skirt. I wore a white collared shirt and my black robe. I put on my black shoes like everyone else and high socks. It took about 10 minutes to put everything on and that's only because I was awake enough to do it. I could already smell the bacon and potatoes downstairs. When everyone lined up together to walk out of the door, or frame, 2 taller looking gingers ran in front to be the first ones downstairs. One of them pushed me out of the way and I tipped over, he looked back to apologize but said it rather quickly.
I've got to know their names, I keep calling them 'Gingers'...
