Chapter Five; The Red String Theory
It's the morning in the hospital, the sun shining bright with a bit of freshness in the air. Lisa can see it clearly, the office of her is in the top floor making her see the great view from down to up. She smiled, seeing different cars pass by. Sipping her coffee and dramatically making a sound. She sat down, stretching her body, her glasses falling down a little.
It wasn't long enough for her attention to be taken away, as she sees loads of paper works she had finished last night. She smiles big and is satisfied by it. In front of the door of Lisa's office, Irene watches as Lisa arranges her work properly, thinking how young Lisa is to feel alive with the exhausting work they have.
Irene can't help but to think that this is her first life, to be through and to be there. She can't help but to have a little smile on her face as well, seeing Lisa can be this happy with the small amount of things in front of her. Cue; this is the next C.E.O of their hospital. She just need to be there.
Lisa is happy, young and carefree. That's what Irene thinks, she reminded Lisa of her younger sister, Minjeong who apparently aspires to be a doctor. Wanting to work in the same Hospital as her, she warmly sighs. Remembering her sister promised that they'll work together no matter what happened.
Thinking of it makes Irene emotionally stable.
Lisa tapped her ballpen up and down, not that long enough to notice Irene standing in her door. Her eyes widened, as she sat up properly. Saying Irene's name with much visibility of surprise and glad. She said; "Dr. Bae. You're here!" She smiled awkwardly. "How long you've been standing there?"
Irene laughs, "Not long enough, Dr. Manoban."
"Get in," she initiates, watching Irene get inside of her office. Closing the glass door from behind. "What brings you here, Dr. Bae?"
"Dr. Park asked me to go here and have you eat breakfast with us." Irene answers casually. "Your friends are there already, Dr. Jennie Kim wanted to come, however she trip herself and kind of hurt her ankle. That's why I'm the only one who's fetching you."
Lisa stepped out, approaching Irene. "That's nice, thank you for fetching me. Is Jennie alright?" She asked. Irene didn't fail to hide her questioning face. There's something about Jennie and Lisa that seems odd to her.
"She's fine, Dr. Son already did her job to make Dr. Kim feels better." She answered, "anyway, are you coming with me? I'm sure they're hungry and waiting for you."
"Sure, let's go?" She opened the door for her. Walking away from her office, the hall doesn't have a lot of doctors going around. Lisa and Irene walked side by side without saying anything. It wasn't an awkward silence that they're feeling, it was warmth and it's enough for both of them.
Irene likes it, she doesn't have to spend her time sharing a conversation she's not comfortable with. She's glad that they might be thinking the same thing as they went down in the cafeteria of the Hospital without sharing a conversation at all.
Rosé tapped Jisoo's shoulder, pointing out Lisa and Irene. All of them are very hungry and wanted to start eating already, but Jennie doesn't want to. Saying it's rude to eat without others. So they restrain themselves from eating, waiting for the two of them to arrive.
"Just our luck, they're here already." Jisoo announced. Lisa smiled at them, apologizing for coming late. "It's fine, go on order your food!"
Irene sat down beside Bogum who greeted her, and Lisa sat down beside Jennie who didn't say anything but acknowledge her presence. She gets the menu, looking at it one by one. When she spotted what she wanted she called the man working there to have and get her order. Thanking him as he walks away.
"So, Dr. Manoban. How's your first day here?" Bogum asked, showing an excited smile. "This is your first time seeing your hospital right? Because I haven't seen you get in here. I wonder why."
Lisa smiled back, "It was nice, I enjoyed working here and the view in our office. I'm very happy about it. To answer your curiosity. I studied at Harvard for years and graduated there with my other degrees. My father wants me to study medicine here in korea."
Jisoo can see Lisa's expression clearly. She decided to cut it out by sharing something. "I studied at Harvard as well. Me and these girls are schoolmates there."
"So you guys met there?"
"No, we've been friends since we're in high school in California." Jennie answered this time. "But Rosé and Lisa are childhood friends."
Rosé nodded, "Jisoo and Jennie are cousins."
Bogum nodded, drinking his water in one go. Irene kept herself quiet as she doesn't want to talk anymore, but the world has other plans for her. "So, Dr. Bae. Where did you study for your degree?" Jennie asked munching her food.
Irene was taken aback, Bogum looked over at Irene worriedly. Where she studied and the world revolves around her dreams, the University where she went is always a personal matter for her. She studied in public school sponsored by the government. "I was in Korea National University."
Jennie raises her right eyebrows, "Public or Private?"
"Just public."
"You must be very smart then," Lisa interrupted. Smiling at Irene. "I know that school my father and I went there last month for graduation. We were invited by Senator Kim. Only smart people can go there and receive the privilege to study there."
Irene nodded shyly, "Thank you, Dr. Manoban."
"What a coincidence, that month is when Irene graduated." Bogum interrupted the moment, "I was there cheering her up like a real best friend I am." He bragged. "Look at the faith bringing us all together. Isn't that nice?"
"Sure."
"Yeah."
"Cool."
"Hmm."
"Minjeong, why are you here?" Bogum suddenly called out.
"Oh, Ms. Lisa?"
