Moss had always been drawn to Mere, like a moth to a flame, they loved Mere's bright smile and warmth she gave off. Yet Moss hid their true self from her, terrified that if she saw under all the chaos and wild laughter that Mere would be frightened .
Moss often wandered through life feeling small and insignificant, overshadowed by the radiant beauty of those around them. They hid their flaws with loud theatrics, hoping to keep people from noticing the acne that dotted their face and the scars littering their legs and stomach. They'd wear the baggiest clothes, or high rise pants to keep people from noticing the areas that weren't like everyone else's .
Mere was beautiful, she held a radiance that transcended the mortal realm. She had a kind of warmth about her, it made people want to be around her. Her hair was never messy or wild, her skin smooth and beautiful, her smile uncrooked and shining. Moss fell in love with the beautiful girl, unable to hold it in.
Mere often caught herself glancing at the wild person, noticing the things most found to be flaws, she loved them. At the sight of the scars on Moss however, her heart clenched, she felt terrified that someone she cared about so deeply went through such a horrible time they felt the need to cause themselves more pain.
Moss and Mere's love eventually reached each other, wrapping them tightly together. But as weeks turned to months, Moss only felt more and more unworthy of the love Mere gave them. Battling with these harsh thoughts they quickly turned back to their shitty old ways.
Mere noticed the sudden change in Moss's attitude. She'd noticed the change in their wardrobe, they wouldn't wear a bathing suit to swim, or a pair of shorts to go hiking when it was over 97 degrees out. They kept their legs hidden, their stomach always covered, even when it was just them and Mere alone together.
Moss knew Mere was wondering if they were okay. They couldn't ask for help, couldn't admit how they'd been feeling. They knew it was only a matter of time before Mere found someone better, someone less flawed and annoying.
Over time Moss only withdrew further and further away from Mere, burrowing deep inside their own thoughts. They began suffocating inside their head , the world became unbearable. All they ever worried about anymore was if they looked good enough, if they looked like someone Mere could love.
Mere's heart had been heavy for a long time, her thoughts bubbling up inside her. She became terrified of what she already knew. Moss was losing themselves in their own worry of not being good enough. She hadn't seen them in days, quickly she made up her mind to go find them.
As Mere rushes through the city, searching frantically for Moss, she sees them sitting in a secluded area. Their legs are up against their chest, their face buried in their knees. Mere could hear their choking sobs from where she stood. She runs over and wraps them in a gentle embrace.
"I know you're hurting honey. I just hope you know that to me, you're the most beautiful person in the world. If it wasn't obvious already when I look at you I HAVE to look away bc u make me feel shy you make me flustered and it's cute when you look at me sometimes and your uhh pupils? Get bigger AND I love your smile. It's so pretty it makes me smile AND I think you're the most beautiful person in the whole world."
Mere knew Moss was hurting, she also knew she could help. Mere loved Moss , every little thing about them was amazing to her. Moss now sees that.
