His soft hum vibrates through the space between us, the quiet chuckle he lets out against my earlobe sending a shiver down my spine. His voice is low, dangerous, as he leans in closer, his breath warm against my skin.
"You can keep lying to yourself...

I lean back into the faux-leather chair across from the counselor, my arms crossed, boredom practically radiating off me. The clock ticks. Loud. Like it knows something I don't.
We sit in a silence that isn't awkward- it's loaded. Like both of us know what needs to be said, but neither wants to fire the first shot.
"How have you been, Alexandra?"
There it is. The shot.
I shift in my seat, clearing my throat like that'll smooth out my answer. "Uh- I mean, I just retook my chem exam," I offer with a laugh that barely lands. "And Kaia and I are hanging out later, so... yeah."
Amber doesn't even blink. "Mentally."
God.
I glance down and start picking at the skin around my nails. "I mean... fine. I guess. Not worse, if that's what you're asking."
She hums, scribbling something in that little leather-bound notebook of hers. "This is your first month back in person since last summer."
As if I needed a reminder.
"Do you think now that you're back... you preferred online?"
I shrug. "I don't know. Maybe?" My voice tilts up into a question, even though I don't care for an answer.
Her glasses slip a little, and she nudges them up with one finger. "How has socializing been?"
My eyes roll before I can stop them. Of all the useless questions.
When has socializing ever felt simple?
I sigh, letting my shoulders sink. "It's been... okay." My gaze drops to the scuffed toes of my boots. "Same as always. Mostly just been sticking with Harrison and-"
"Kaia," she finishes with a small, knowing smile.
I allow myself the tiniest smirk. "You know too much, Amber."
She laughs softly. "If you ever need an alibi, I'm your girl."
I click my tongue. "At this rate, I might just."
Her expression shifts.
"Principal Hickens mentioned the... incident with those two students on Monday."
Of course he did.
I prop my chin on my hand. "It was a misunderstanding," I say flatly. "And one I'm not dumb enough to repeat."
