It had been a few days after my mother's murder. Ian had offered me to stay with him, but I declined and moved in with Joey instead. Investigations were held, many investigations, but no one actually tried to find the culprit. It wasn’t until yesterday when the police office had gotten an anonymous call. The person on the other side of the call had said that they thought of who the killer might be. Jeffrey Woods, they called him, famous in teenage stories, had supposedly killed my mom. There had been no evidence that pointed to him, but they had no other choice than to give it some thought. Not so long after they actually found evidence leading towards him. The way she was killed, her body mutilated and there were obvious signs of torture. The police officers didn’t try to dim down the details for me, though I was still obviously grieving.
Me and Joey currently sat in his basement. Me on the recliner and him on the 3-person couch in the middle of the room in front of the stairs. He had turned on the T.V and started scrolling through Netflix. I just kind of stared at the ground, not really sure why I was here. Joey finally found a movie worth watching, American Psycho is what it was called. I didn’t pay too much attention to it, just mostly listening. It hadn’t been long before I decided to pull out my phone and go onto snapchat, scrolling through Ian’s page. I kept scrolling until I saw a specific video that was posted about an hour ago. It was one of him and his friend, Brady, both singing together. It was really dorky but somewhat sweet as well. He seemed happy, but there was something about the video that didn’t seem right. There was a dark figure in the hallway, barely peeking around the doorframe of the living room. I instantly had the urge to call Ian or go to his house. As I stood up from my chair, Joey paused the movie and looked up at me from where he sat.
“Where are you going?” He said while standing up as well. I knew that Joey would say he would want to come with me if I said I was going to Ian’s. A thought of lying to him about where I was going flashed in my mind, but I instantly swept it away. I cannot break his trust and end up losing him as well.
“I need to go to Ian’s..” I responded flatly.
“What- Why?” He seemed a little surprised, but a grin instantly crept onto his skinny face, “Wait, are you going to confess your love to him?” I could feel my face heat up.
“Joey, no. I saw something in one of the videos he posted tonight and now I feel like I need to check on him..”
“What kind of thing was in it??” He questioned, his feet shuffling a little.
“It was just a silhouette, but I want to check on him. I’m still on edge after what happened to my-...” I pause for a moment, my heart aching and tears pricking my eyes, “You know..” He sighs, understanding the conflicts inside me.
“Fine, just make sure your phone is charged and bring a pocket knife.” He said in quite a hurry, turning off the T.V and tossing the remote onto the blanket filled couch. He begins to rush up the stairs, but I grab his wrist, making him turn to me.
“Joey, thank you..” Is all I can muster, my throat strained from crying over the past few days. He nods slightly, flashing me a small smile.
“I’m glad I can be of assistance, your highness.” He grins, his goofy self never fading even in the dark gravity of the situation. He rushes back up the stairs, leaving me alone for a moment more before I run up after him. He had walked over to his parents room.
“Why do you need to go in there?” I ask, following behind him.
“I’m going to leave a few notes in the house for them to see just in case we go missing or something like that.” He says as he walks over to the dresser, beginning to write on a piece of paper.
