A missionary came to the shore, but was defeated immediately. They looted their cargo but left behind one thing.
17 year old Haukea was just randomly exploring the shoreline of her island when she found the boat from the missionary they got rid off. It was beginning to fall apart when something caught Haukea's eye. It was a English dictionary. For the next 2 years, she eventually read the book and began to learn English.
The island was starting to fall apart, the matais had to decide what they should do. They thought it would be best if someone sailed out to seek a better future. Haukea's father knew that she had been learning English and would be able to fend for herself. So it was settled.
Haukea had pride in herself. She believed she could. Haukea said her goodbyes to her family and packed food but mostly her weapons and her book. She sailed off and began her very long journey to find a better future for her people.
