Detective Dickson was in the principal's office, sifting through reports compiled by other students about the party. When he saw Valentina, an abnormal expression surfaced on his face.
Valentina handed him a written report and explained, "Sir, your partner told other people information about this case; before this situation blows over, can you do something about this?"
"I was hoping you were here to bring me any substantial information; instead, you came here to spread malicious accusations about my colleague." Detective Dickson quirked his mouth.
With his hands raised, Valentina firmly stated, "I am not making baseless accusations; I overheard the owner of the local grocery complaining of not letting any school kids enter his store because he said, quote on quote, 'according to his friend's sister, one of them might be the killer.'"
Detective Dickson raised his voice and asked, "Do you happen to be aware that making false accusations against a police officer could potentially lead to legal action!?"
"I am not lying," Valentina replied sternly.
"You stubborn little..."
Constable Wallace burst into the room, her eyes widening as she took in the sight of Detective Dickson's flushed complexion and Valentina's expressionless gaze.
The tension in the room was palpable as Wallace tried to gauge the situation unfolding before her.
On learning what happened, she shot a nervous glance at Detective Dickson before turning to Valentina. "Kid, are you sure I was the one that the grocery worker was talking about? I have been partnering with Detective Dickson for three years, and I never made the amateur mistake of revealing pertinent information. Maybe you misheard what the information was."
'For the entirety of my existence, I was born with acute hearing; just as I could hear a child crying from a mile away, I could hear the fierce racing of Constable Wallace's heart.' Valentina thought, 'My hearing never failed me when I was running away from home, and unless I'm dead, it isn't going to fail me now.'
"Aren't you two the only investigators in this case who interviewed us?" Valentina fished. He decided to throw in a hook to catch a massive bait.
"Yes." Constable Wallace obliviously nodded her head.
"It's one thing to say that the people around a certain area are guilty." Valentina lowers his head. "But to say that kids going to school are guilty?" He chuckled and pondered. "Well, isn't that an oddly specific piece of information?"
Constable Wallace protested angrily, "Why are you so intent on accusing me? I did not do anything wrong! Because you are a minor, do you think I wouldn't file a complaint against you for slandering me?"
"Go ahead!" Valentina sneered.
"What?" Constable Wallace and Detective Dickson sat motionless, their bodies rigid with shock, unable to move from their seats.
"Make a complaint against me. Be my guest." Valentina waved his hand.
Valentina let out a scornful laugh as Detective Dickson and Constable Wallace remained in their positions. He snatched back his report and left the room.
Stepping outside, he banged his fist into a wall. The situation would have been better if he had ignored it, but at what cost? His wellbeing?
There was no point in filing a complaint against Constable Wallace. If he filed a complaint against her at a police station, it would draw more attention to him, and they would cover for her ass.
It was risky to complain to Detective Dickson because Valentina hoped he would put his emotions aside and do his job by reporting a potential information leak.
