The Tragedy of Us

Part One: The First to Go

By Tear Deamons Symphony

It wasn't too long ago that I remember what happened. Or is it not too far in the future? I'm not so sure anymore, but I guess that happens sometimes. I can't tell if what I see are memories or what's going to happen. You know, when you're dead, something as insignificant as time ceases to mean anything to you. I mean, it affects everyone else, but it doesn't affect you anymore, if that makes any sense. I guess I should start from the beginning... or maybe this would be the end? Again, I can't tell anymore. Let's just start back when I was alive and go on from there.

"Are you bloody well joking? Are you sure that you want to do something so completely bonkers? If you are not, this could right well come back to haunt you for the rest of your life. So again I ask: Are you positively sure about this?" Evangeline was on the extreme side of agitated, if the way her usually crisp British accent becoming impossibly close to Cogny indicated anything... but I guess, looking back, I can see why.

"Really," Pru said in that soothing way she has. "You do need to be certain of what you want to do with your life before you do something so drastic and... well... permanent, for lack of a better word,"

I rolled my eyes at their motherly attempts to run my life. "Guys, it's okay. It's just a little tattoo on my arm. It marks me as an sorceress. Master Kane has one, and he said it hardly hurt at all to get it. I mean, seriously, it's so not a big deal!"

"Ava, you narrow girl..." Evangeline shook her head. "Did you talk with Skyler? You know, to see if it was okay for you to go all advanced magic on him?"

"Uh..." I tried to restrain from blushing as I answered, "Well, he hasn't been much for talking lately. He more or less... um... grunts? Moans? Shivers? Dramatic sighs of satisfaction? I could go on, but I sense you get what I'm talking about here," I grinned like the witch I was.

Pru shook her head slowly, a look of mild irritation and reluctant amusement showing on her face. "Evie," she said, rubbing the bridge of her nose, pushing her glasses up about half an inch. It's amazing that she still wore those, even though she never really needed them in the first place. "Can you handle this? I'm supposed to help Aloys with his Summoners training, and I can not have a headache when I do that. You know how he gets, being as you were his teacher before me,"

"Yes, I was, and I am beyond happy to land you with him, Pru. Did you know that I love you?" Evie added slyly. "And so does London," Winking at me, she added, "He's been doing a lot more than just sighing lately. Are you finally giving him a bit of fluff or is he still Barkley's Banking?" I watched Pru turn bright pink.

"That's not fair, Evie. You know Pru wouldn't do any thing like that before he put a ring on her finger," Even though she was frustrated with me, I knew Pru would appreciate some back up on this. "Right, Pru?" She gave a half hearted smiled as she grabbed her uniform jacket off the coat rack.

She left, and I turned towards the rays of early dawn. For some reason, I felt a chill as the light touched me. "That jacket really is sexy," I commented lightly. "If I actually wore mine, the boys would be all over me, and Skyler would have to kill some of them to keep me all to himself,"

Evie looked at me and sighed. I knew what was coming next, but I still wanted to believe it wasn't. "So, are you and Skyler going to wed so I can hear some little feet pattering from roof to roof? You know, before I die?"

"You know, if I could muster up the energy for a face palm, I would,"

"True, but then you would have a huge bloody handprint on your face that would unbalance the effect of the dishy blazer,"
