Pluto's POV

It had been ten years since Pluto had run away from home, and quite frankly, she felt much better here, in her new home, than that horrible place she ran away from. Sighing, she collapsed onto her bed, listening to the quiet hum of the night and the occasional chatter of the other residents of Safe Bay. Soon, the sounds faded and she drifted off to sleep, memories of the past slipping into her dreams.

Trixie's POV

Trixie had only arrived a year back, after her parents died and left her with her evil aunt. She missed her loving parents dearly, but felt at home in this small shabby Safe Bay. She sat on the edge of her bed, only a cabin over from her best friend, Pluto. She smiled as she thought of Pluto, her heart fluttering a bit. Suddenly, a scream pierced through the gentle night, followed by sobs and whimpers, all coming from close by. Jumping up, Trixie ran outside of her cabin and into Pluto's. Running over to Pluto's bed, she shook her awake.

"Trixie?" Pluto murmured sleepily, her hair messy in a cute way, "I was screaming again, wasn't I?"

Trixie nodded, hugging Pluto to calm her down.

"What was it about this time?" Trixie asked, trying to sooth her friend.

"I think it was just a reminder of the last time I saw my horrid father and step siblings," Pluto replied warily, shuddering and leaning into Trixie's hug.

"What happened that day?" Trixie asked before adding, "You don't have to tell me if it's too hard."

Sighing Pluto responded, "No, it's fine. This is what happened..."

FLASHBACK

Pluto ran down the stairs, eager to get to school and see her friends. They were her escape from the constant bullying at home, but she never told them that.

"Pluto, hurry up and get in the car! God, you're useless!" her father shouted, storming up the stairs and grabbing her by her arm, tightly, then dragging her down the stairs into the car. Pluto didn't say anything, just sat in the car silently, knowing if she reacted she'd just get scolded for being 'weak'. Lost in her thoughts, she didn't hear the car stop by an old forest people rumoured to be haunted, though her father just said that was a load of baloney.

"Out," her father said harshly, jerking her out of her train of thought, and the car.

"Why are we here?" Pluto pondered out loud, her five year old brain not reading the smirks on her step siblings faces.

"Your siblings need to do something, I'll be in the car," her father replied gruffly, getting into the car.

Pluto slowly turned around to face her step-siblings, only to see them both holding slingshots and aiming towards her. Terrified, she slowly started backing into the woods. She knew the twins always bullied her, and hurt her, but this was serious. Spinning around, she bolted into the forest, never seen again by her abusive family.

END OF FLASHBACK

Pluto's POV

Pluto finished her story, shaking as she'd never told anyone about that moment. She looked up at Trixie, who was sitting on the edge of her bed, hair gently being blown by a slight breeze coming from her open door. Pluto's heart gave a little skip, and her eyes widened with realisation. She had a crush on her best friend. She had a crush on her best friend! Looking away, Pluto murmured something quietly to Trixie.

"Hey Trixie, have you ever felt loved by someone you're not related to, but as more than a friend?" she turned away, not looking at Trixie.

"Only by one person," Trixie replied softly, also looking away, "Why?"

"I-i... I was just wondering."

Trixie's POV

Trixie stared down at Pluto, who was mumbling and looking away. That's when it hit her. Her best friend had a crush on her. Her best friend had a crush on her. Standing up, she walked out of Pluto's room, softly saying goodbye. Lying down on her own bed, she thought about how Pluto's name made her heart flutter, and hugging her felt... right. What she had said to Pluto wasn't a lie. She had only felt loved, truly loved, by one person outside of her family, but she'd never say who, at least not to Pluto. Sighing with frustration, she rolled onto her stomach and closed her eyes, welcoming the sweet, warm dreams of her past.

Pluto's POV

Pluto lazily got out of her bed and walked out of her cabin, but was assaulted by the bright vibrant shades of pink hearts scattered over the grass, each one with the same words. 'Dear _____, will you be my Valentine?'. After making sure no one was looking, Pluto quickly picked one up and slipped it into her pocket, walking back into her cabin to find a pen. Finally finding one, she slowly took out the pink heart, writing a name on it before stuffing it into her drawer, knowing she'd never have the courage to give it to her. She then heard a small knock on her door, and opened it to reveal Trixie. Blushing as she realised she was still in her pyjamas, she excused herself to her bathroom to get changed, hoping for a good day ahead.

Trixie's POV

Trixie sat on Pluto's chair, patiently waiting for her. Looking around, she noticed a stray pen on Pluto's desk and the edge of a pink heart peeking out of a drawer. Unable to resist the urge, she slowly pulled it out, revealing the name written on the pink heart, quietly gasping. Dropping it on the desk, she stood up and waited by the door for Pluto to come out, and she didn't have to wait long, as Pluto did a few seconds later. Mustering up all her courage, she looked Pluto dead in the eye and said.

"Yes."

Pluto looked at Trixie, confused, before realisation dawned on her, as she saw the pink heart on the table. Turning a deep shade of red, she looked at Trixie, whose face was redder. Taking a deep breath, Trixie grabbed Pluto's hand, interlocking their fingers, then walked out the door with Pluto right by her side, finally realising this was her home.

A/N: I would like to touch on a few points in this short story that I feel people may have misunderstood. These girls met in a 'Safe Bay' for people who are abused at home and need a safe place to stay, and they are both 15. Also, this was set on Valentine's day, as that is what inspired me to write this short story. If you want a sequel for after this, or a prequel about their pasts, I may make one, depending on if I have time or not, but please comment if you do.
