ALAYNE, 134 AC

Every morning for the next few weeks, Alayne joined Helaena in her chambers. The first afternoon had gone well, and with her family gone, Alayne was grateful for the company. The children were absolutely precious, and Alayne was honestly glad that they took after Helaena instead of Aegon.

Mornings were already uncomfortable, as she would wake to her husband's arm around her and something distinctly hard poking against her lower back. Every night, Aemond placed a pillow between them, and every morning, it would be tossed aside. Alayne didn't know if he was doing it on purpose or if it was purely accidental. Either way, she was conflicted. Her emotions were torn between pushing him away or pulling him toward her.

And she hated it, especially when she could still feel the ghost of her past lingering beside her.

Alayne's embroidery hoop sat motionless in her hands, a needle pursed between two fingers as she glanced down at the basket she'd brought along with her. Nestled inside was an extra hoop, more thread and cloth, and the letters from her family.

She'd started to open them the day she received them, waiting until night fell so she could read them by candlelight in her chambers—Aemond's chambers. They weren't her rooms, she had to constantly remind herself. They were his, for she wouldn't be residing in them for too long.
