my best friend

'my best friend' - short story

The little girl in the corner seems to always be alone.

Everyone tells me to stay away from her, but she looks so gloomy.
I wonder why no one wants to talk to her. 

Just like us, she's human. She deserves love, too.

My colleagues do not agree with me.
All I can do is watch from afar.
Otherwise, they will start to make fun of me.

I guess they aren't human, after all.

One day, when my colleagues were on break, I decided to talk to the little girl.

Just as I was about to talk to her, I heard a small giggle.

I looked around the corner, and saw her facing the wall, staring up and talking to the air.
Almost as if she was conversing with someone.
Or something.

I suddenly felt a chill go down my back. It was quite cold.
Maybe because I felt a bit uncomfortable by her giggling.

Sure, it was common for children to have imaginary friends, but this was just...
unsettling.

I brushed off the feeling, and went to talk to her.

"Hello there! My name is Lauren, and I've noticed you are always alone, so I came to talk to you."
She stopped laughing and just stood there, staring up at the wall.

"Uh, what's your name?" Maybe she doesn't want to talk to me?

"...ay..."

What?
She turned around slowly. 

"Go away."
"Go away. I don't like you." she said in a small, unshaken voice.

O-oh...
This has never happened to me before. Usually children love talking to me.

"Oh, I-I'm sorry. I just wanted to know if you wanted to become friends with me."

'I already have one'

"Sorry, what did you sa-"

"GO AWAY!"
Her voice had suddenly changed from a soft voice to one which was a bit lower.
Surprised, I had immediately turned back and starting away walking away.

When walking away, I heard her speaking.

"Aileen, doesn't want friends."
"I already have you, I don't need anyone else."

Just who is she talking to?
