In our world, we categorize people as best friends, friends, crushes, lovers, parents, exes, and fake friends. We label those who manipulate us and make us insecure as snakes. We often believe our problems are so overwhelming that anyone else dealing with them would feel constantly on the brink of despair. We fail to appreciate the small moments of happiness and the little rewards we receive. Even those destined for greatness sometimes grapple with thoughts of suicide, and some tragically succumb to these thoughts. Amidst all this, we find a young girl who is unaware of the challenges that await her in the future.

Meet Katherine Ellis, a six-year-old girl born into a wealthy family. Her loving mother, Amelia Ellis, did not take her husband's last name, nor did she impose it on Katherine. Katherine's father, William Smith, was not a loving parent. Amelia was forced into an arranged marriage, a remnant of her orthodox family's oppressive traditions. Amelia's family monitored her every move from childhood, never allowing her to venture far without a location tracker or some form of surveillance. Any attempt to stray would result in immediate retrieval and punishment. This suffocating control has not changed; she is still confined to the house unless there is an emergency. Despite her circumstances, Amelia tried her hardest to shield Katherine from a similar fate.

William Smith, with a history of criminal behavior and abuse, was a domineering and cruel figure who believed women should be subservient. Katherine was not allowed to attend school, make friends, or interact with others. She was like a bird trapped in a cage. However, Amelia occasionally convinced someone to allow her small freedoms or purchase something for Katherine. Amelia frequently bought books for Katherine, nurturing her love for science fiction, history, math, English, and the occasional story or tale.

It was evening, and Amelia was rushing back home with books and novels for Katherine.

Amelia: "Oh no, it's almost time. He's probably on his way back. God, stupid traffic."

An older woman called out to her.

Older Woman: "Lady! Lady!"

Amelia stopped and turned toward the voice.
Older Woman: "Take this book... no, it's free. My granddaughter doesn't want it."
Amelia hesitated for a moment before responding.

As Amelia hurried home with the books, she felt a mix of anxiety and hope. She knew that every moment counted before William's return.

Amelia: "Thank you," she said to the older woman, quickly tucking the book into her bag and rushing off.

She finally reached the grand but oppressive house. As she entered, she glanced nervously at the clock. There was still a little time before William's usual arrival.

Amelia: "Katherine! I'm home," she called out, her voice echoing through the empty hallways.

Katherine came running down the stairs, her eyes lighting up at the sight of her mother and the bag of books.

Katherine: "Welcome back, Oh. Did you get new books?"

Amelia: "Yes, sweetheart. I got you some new books. And look, this one was a special gift from a kind lady."

Katherine took the book eagerly, her small hands clutching it as if it were a treasure.

Katherine: "Thank you. I can't wait to read it."

Amelia smiled, relieved to see Katherine's happiness. But her relief was short-lived as she heard the unmistakable sound of William's car pulling into the driveway.

Amelia: "Katherine, quickly, go to your room and start reading. Remember, stay quiet."

Katherine nodded and hurried to her room, clutching her new book. Amelia took a deep breath and prepared herself for William's arrival.

The door opened, and William walked in, his presence filling the room with tension.

William: "Amelia, where have you been?"

Amelia: "Just out running errands, William."

William: "Errands, huh? Let's hope that's all it was."

Amelia kept her head down, not wanting to provoke him. She knew that as long as Katherine stayed quiet and out of sight, they might get through another evening unscathed.
In her room, Katherine opened the book the older woman had given her. As she began to read, she felt a sense of escape and wonder. The world inside the book was so different from her own, and for a little while, she could forget the fear and confinement of her reality.
Katherine: "Someday, I'll find a way out," she whispered to herself, losing herself In another reality.

Time Skip

Amelia opens the door slowly, carefully tiptoeing her way into Katherine's tiny room, which had once been a mere closet. The cramped space was a testament to the oppressive life they both endured.

Amelia: "Katherine, sweetie, I have something for you," she whispers, trying to add some cheer to her voice.

Katherine's eyes light up as she spots the books hidden among the cleaning supplies and groceries. One book, in particular, catches her eye—The Fated.

Katherine: "Mom, what is this book about?"

Amelia: "Even I don't know," she replies, her voice tinged with a hint of mystery.

Katherine: "Really? I want to read this one first," she says eagerly, pointing at the book.

Amelia watches as Katherine's excitement grows, hoping these small moments of joy can provide some comfort and escape.Little did Katherine know, her life was about to spiral into unforeseen depths of darkness.
