She looks at me as if she just saw a ghost. Her dark brown eyes meet my hazel ones, and I couldn't help but smirk at how flustered I make her.
Her body pivots towards the board as she notices everyone shuffling around. Her eyes widen in surprise when she realizes she's been placed right next to me.
As she slowly makes her way to my side of the room, I pull out my phone to text Jae.
Her floral scent invades my nostrils, and I think,
"Ugh, she smells good."
Quickly, she places her things down and gets herself situated.
Throughout the entire lecture, she didn't look my way once. I couldn't understand why it irritated me, but it did. But once the bell rang, I purposely pulled my seat back, blocking her path.
"Sorry, could you excuse me? I really need to go." she finally musters up the courage to say to me.
"Of course, sorry about that." i respond back.
She whispers a small "It's okay," barely audible, but I catch the faint sound. With a nod, I rise from my seat, gathering my belongings, I carefully push my chair in, creating a path for her to pass through.
I too head out to the door heading to meet Jae at his car.
★
"Dude, what took you so long" he asks as I get inside the car.
"Don't worry about it," I respond
"You was drooling over that Lilith girl again?"
"Don't start,"
"Oh, I was just beginning to."
"Bro you obviously like her, I don't know why you don't just ask her out!"
I stay silent refusing to say anything further.
When it comes to Lilith, I want to figure out how I feel before I initiate anything because the last thing I want to do is hurt her.
"Okay, okay, let's end the Lilith talk," he says as he starts the car and makes his way out the school parking lot.
As we crept through the line of cars, filled with impatient high school students eager to depart, my gaze fell to Lilith walking next to a boy.
"Hey, isn't that Lilith?" Jae asks, his voice breaking the silence in the car.
"Yeah...," I responded slowly. "Do you know the boy she's with?" I question.
Jae bursts out laughing, breaking the tension.
"If you're worried, he's not tryna get with your girl. That's Kaleb Finley; he's gay. Don't you remember him from middle school?" he reassured me, his laughter echoing in the car.
"No, he's changed a lot since I last saw him" I respond.
A wave of reassurance washed over me.

Jae drops me off at my house.
As I entered the door, Luna greeted me, basking in the sunlight streaming through the window. I smiled at her and let her enjoy her moment, making a beeline for the kitchen.
"Ollie!!" my little sister sister screams excitedly as she runs up to me, giving me a long hug.
I pick her up and make my way over to my mom, planting a kiss on her cheek.
"She has been talking about you non-stop today," my mom began, handing me two pieces of bread with Nutella spread on them.
"Is that so Stella? You missed me?" I ask
She nodded her head vigorously, her enthusiasm infectious. My mom and I shared a chuckle as I gently set her down. I then eagerly dove into the after-school snack my mom had prepared for me.
"So, how was school?" my mom finally asks, her tone filled with genuine interest.
"Yeah, how was school?!" Stella chimed in, climbing onto the stool next to me, her eyes wide with anticipation.
"It was fine, thanks for asking." I respond.
"Remember to start looking at colleges to apply to, especially Harvard. You know how badly your dad wants you to go," my mom reminded me with a hint of seriousness.
"Yes, Mom, I will look into it," I replied.
"Ollie," Stella whispers in my ear.
"Did you see Grapefruit at school?"
Grapefruit was me and Stella's code name for Lilith. I never had plans on telling anybody in my family about her but she caught on real quick.
"Yes, I did," I whispered back, unable to contain the smile that stretched from ear to ear.
"You know you guys really have to let me in on this Grapefruit situation," my mom insisted.
"No! It's me and Ollie's secret" Stella declares
"Okay, Okay, but I will find out," my mom said with a playful warning, raising her eyebrows before exiting the kitchen.
Stella and I start giggling together, as I tell her more about my day. I break off the her half of my last piece of bread before heading upstairs.
