Title: Deaf or Dead
Purpose: Five minute DRWI screenplay assignment.
End: Yay yay I got another A
Genre: Drama
Warnings: None
Description: Kiimak, a 6 year old boy, and his friend find out he is going deaf. Scared to tell anyone, they decide to keep it a secret, which will have consequences.
Note: I had to keep this under fifteen minutes WHICH SUCKS SO BAD because it reads super rushed. Like, the pacing is just not it. It would have been better if I made it longer. ALSO ALSO THIS IS A SCREENPLAY! THE FORMAT WILL BE THE SAME AS THE ELEVATOR CONFLICT SCENE LAST CHAPTER!
EXT. BEACH - DAY
A group of young children are playing "Take Away" on the beach their native tribe's village is near. There is one child, MORTA (8), wearing a blindfold while sitting in a small circle drawn in the sand. Surrounding her are several wooden balls which the other children are trying to steal without getting tagged. One of the kids whistles and Morta swings her hands blindly in his direction. The other kids try to steal the balls.
Eventually, she has tagged everyone and wins the game. She takes off the blindfold, grinning proudly and laughing at her friends.
MORTA: (laughing) I win again! That means I pick who goes in the circle next!
She looks around, slowly deciding who to pick as the next victim of the circle.
MORTA: (CONT'D) You! Kiimak!
Angle on KIIMAK (6) who looks rather alarmed. Morta puts the blindfold on his head. They guide him into the circle and restart the game. His friend, AMANTE (6), cups his hands around his mouth to shout tauntingly.
AMANTE: Don't worry Kiimak! We won't go easy on you!
The game begins. Close in on Kiimak's concentrated face. The sound is now muted, with only a few dim sounds able to be heard. He blindly sweeps his arms a few times, but we don't see if any of his attempts actually tag someone.
The camera slowly pans out to reveal the kids are easily dodging his blind attempts to hit them. They are also easily taking the wooden balls from the circle without him even noticing.
The sound is now back to normal. Amante manages to snag the last wooden ball and notices Kiimak does not even react to him. Curiously, he whistles at Kiimak, who immediately reacts.
KID 1: (displeased) That was easy!
KID 2: Yeah, were you even trying?!
Kiimak struggles to take his blindfold off.
KIIMAK: I'm sorry, I'm bad at this game.
AMANTE: That's not true! My brother is even badder at it!
KIIMAK: Someone else can be blindfolded now now, I think I'm done.
Kiimak sits up and it is clear he is very upset. He passes off the blindfold and leaves. Amante follows him.
At first, he doesn't say anything to tell Kiimak he's there. Testing a theory, he starts making loud stomps while following. Still Kiimak doesn't react. He does a few more things to subtly get his friend's attention, like smashing rocks and making yipping noises from his throat. He gives up.
AMANTE; Hey!
Kiimak: Ah! What?
AMANTE: Are you feeling good?
