Hi everyone, omg I cannot believe it's been over a year since I published a chapter. Anywhoooo, let's get back to the story! Thanks so much for reading!
-------------------------
Just over a mile away, now underground, she stood outside a damaged heavy metal door. It was later than she liked, and time was of the essence if she wanted to get back somewhere safe before the city woke back up. An old walk-in-sized freezer door, if her suspicions were correct. Knocking once, she stood back a few steps, her hand clutching another hidden knife.
A series of rusty locks rotated before the door was finally wrenched open to an empty room. Taking a breath and keeping her right side in front of her, she entered. The door slammed shut as she whipped around, and she looked up to find a trident pointed at her neck.
Following the burly arm up, to a head of ink-black curls, Ren found dark eyes boring into her. The small dagger still clutched in her right hand was useless, but she couldn't make herself put it away. After a few moments of silent consideration, she took a careful step back, and the trident was pulled away to stand at the man's side.
"Ren." The King broke the silence first and gave her a quick once-over before turning to redo the locks. Moving further away, she continued to stare mutely at him, all her thoughts jumbled. Still holding the weapon, he moved to sit in a large leather chair behind a large dark that had been hidden from her view outside the door.
"Welcome back," he said casually, watching her. There was little furniture other furniture in the room except for a small worn couch, and a large cabinet that stood opposite of the desk. Taking in the room, she was surprised to find herself more at ease in the warm, dim room. Only a small desk lamp lit the room, making it hard for her to study the man sitting cooly across from her.
Carefully, to limit movement to her left arm, Ren removed the outer jacket, letting it fall onto the large desk, and managed to pull the heavy box of ammunition out of its pocket and push it towards him. Without taking his eyes off of her, he moved the box away,
"I had someone scheduled to make that pickup tomorrow," he said bored, waiting for her to finally open her mouth and address the actual matter at hand. Not trusting herself, she picked up the coat and stepped away from the desk again, keeping her eyes averted from the King's penetrating gaze. With the adrenaline rapidly melting away, the pain from all of her injuries came back, slowly searing her insides like a hot iron.
"I expected a lot more out of your boys tonight," Ren bit back at him with clenched teeth. Focusing on her pain and anger, she forgot herself and glared fiercely into his eyes. His met hers like water to fire. He wasn't upset that she had been able to sneak down here, he didn't even seem surprised.
"When they told me you were back, I didn't believe them. I couldn't believe them. I had to see it for myself. And then no one could catch sight of you, so I was sure it'd been a lie, but then you go and pop up again in the middle of the Veil this afternoon with some rudder rat, so yeah I did what I needed to do to round you up."
How insulting, as if I were just another crate of ammunition to be picked up and dropped off as ordered.
"Well, I'm here aren't I; but don't get too excited, I'm not here to get caught up in your silly little war games again." He searched my face, looking for what had driven me here, whether I was a threat or not, why I had left all those years ago.
"I just came to drop off your stupid ammo and lose the very sticky 'rudder rat' as you so nobly dubbed him. Nice seeing you, now if you don't mind, I'll just be getting out of your hair." There were no windows in the room, but an old wooden clock hanging on the wall that ticked away loudly in the metal room.
