Anneliese stood from her seat and stretched. This morning had been absolutely dreadful after her late night, she'd been chugging coffee just to keep her eyes open. Besides, the pastor's message this morning was long, and her thoughts were preoccupied with images of the handsome genius of the night previous.

Kneeling, she removed her messenger bag from under her seat, containing her laptop, scattered pens, and other files from work.

She made her way out of the sanctuary and to the line of people picking up their children from the nursery and preschool rooms. Waiting in line, she felt a pair of small arms grasp her legs.

"Cory! How was Sunday school?" She knelt and wrapped her arms around the small boy.

"It was good, Annie. Did you tell Mommy we get ice cream now?"

"Yes! Don't worry, I texted her last night after you and Isaac went to sleep. Let's go get him from his classroom, so we can leave!" Anneliese took his small hand in hers and weaved through the crowds of people.

It didn't take long to find the other boy, caught up in a game of tag with the other boys in the elementary classroom. When he turned his head and saw Anneliese, he barreled towards her and threw his arms around her middle.

"Isaac! Did you have a good week?" She cupped his face in her hands. "I told you I didn't want any more fights, did our plan work?"

Cory leaned his head against Anneliese as Isaac spoke. "No more fights, Annie. I decided I can only fight bad guys, like you do, not good guys just being mean."

"That's super smart, Isaac. It's hard to know the difference, but that's what learning is all about, huh?"

"Yup." He tugged at her sweater. "Can we go get our ice cream now? You promised."

"I did, didn't I?" Anneliese took each boy by the hand. "Let's go get you checked out and head to Danny's."

She signed the boys out with their teachers and led them through the fellow churchgoers and out to her car. They quickly buckled themselves into their booster seats, eager to start the adventure as soon as possible.

Later that afternoon, when ice cream had been eaten and havoc had been wreaked upon every local park and pigeon, Anneliese's small car wove the road through the woods to her childhood home. She pulled into the gravel patch she'd claimed as her own, waving to the couple on the front porch, still dressed in their Sunday best. They were both in their late forties, had matching crows feet, and bore easy smiles.

The boys shrugged off their seatbelts and threw open the car doors, running towards the older couple. The man picked up Isaac and held him upside down, tickling him. The woman picked Cory up and held him in her arms, even though he was really too big to be held.

Anneliese turned off her car, grabbed her bag from the front seat, and made her way up to the couple on the porch. The woman, her mother, pulled her in for a hug, all while still holding Cory.

"Thank you for taking the boys, Anneliese, they love it when they get their afternoons with you. You weren't too much trouble, were you boys?"

"No!" Isaac cried, his feet having found solid ground again. "We listened when she said it was time to leave and we played where she could see us."

"That's right, they listened really well today, I think they deserve stickers on their charts." Anneliese smiled down at the two boys, tilting her head so her father could kiss her cheek.
