A week or so had gone by already, and 10th grade was off to a great start. I had two guy friends, Walker and Adam, and I had my four best friends, Eva, Teagan, Charlotte, and Eloise, along with a bunch of other girls and guys who I wasn't as close with but we were all still friends. The majority of the sophomores hung out at carline, lunch, and whenever we were able to. We were a tight-knit group of about 25 and got along well.

You can imagine all of our excitement when the teachers announced that our Homecoming dance would be the second week of October, in about a month. The girls all talked amongst themselves, thinking about who might get asked.

"Lily's already guaranteed herself a date," Eva said, talking about one of our other friends. "She's got Brayden." Lily and Brayden had been dating for a little over six months.

"And then there's Hailey and Ryder," Eloise added.

"There's not that many couples this year," I said.

"Not yet," Teagan smirked, looking at me and Eva.

"What?" We both asked at the same time.

"You know who I'm talking about," she said.

"Walker doesn't like me," I groaned.

"Walker likes you, Aaliyah, but Adam doesn't like me," sighed Eva.

"You guys are both oblivious," said Charlotte. "Adam likes Eva, and Walker likes Aaliyah. End of story."

"And how exactly do you know that?" I inquired.

"Well, for you, Walker is always staring at you, sitting next to you, subtly touching you, like guys are obvious when they like someone," said Teagan. "As for you, Eva, Adam talks to you the most out of any of the girls. Why else would that be?"

"He sees me as a friend?" She suggested.

Teagan threw her hands up in the air. "I give up."

I stayed quiet. I did notice that Walker looked at me a lot and everything, and I did like him, but part of me didn't want him to like me. Every time that I've liked a guy and he liked me back, it failed miserably. Walker wasn't like the immature guys I'd had a failed talking stage with in my freshman year. He was the sweetest, most attractive boy I've ever met, and not to mention we're best friends. I couldn't mess that up with him. I couldn't lose our friendship even if it meant I would lose a chance at a relationship.

But if he does like me, I don't know what I would do.

The next day, there were two homecoming proposals. Brayden asked Lily, and Ryder asked Hailey. Both girls said yes, as one would expect. There weren't any other proposals yet, however.

The administration came out with the dance dress code, and it was thankfully looser than last year's. The dress didn't have to be past your fingertips, like last year, but that was the only major change. Low cuts and spaghetti straps were allowed also, which was helpful.

Another announcement that was made was that there was going to be a girls vs boys volleyball game the same day as the dance. It would be the high school girls' volleyball team versus the high school boys volleyball club that they had made. The girls had been practicing since August, and the boys had only had one practice. It seemed likely that there was going to be another girl's domination like there was in the boys-girls game last year.

Like I said earlier, Eva was on the volleyball team, and Adam had signed up for the volleyball club. The two had been going at it jokingly ever since they found out about the match-up.

"You know, you might be good at hockey, but there's no chance you're any good at volleyball," Eva dissed at lunch one day.

"I'm 6'2, I could reach over that net without jumping," Adam shot back. "I'll have an easy time. Don't underestimate me, shortie."
