The Lycan's Prey

Chapter 7

Unknown P.O.V

"Carter you fool!" Captain Cara says as her claws clash at his face. Carter's head wipes to the left on impact and he turns to reveal a claw mark with blood dripping down his left eyebrow to his cheek. He didn't seem to even flinch. It's almost like he didn't feel the pain. Captain Cara's paws morph back into a manicured hand and she grabs a towel from nearby and wipes Carter's blood from her nails.

Carter clenches his jaw as Captain Cara turns back to him.

"Don't let me hear you haven't gotten that pesky rogue." She instructs. She doesn't have to finish the threat as we all know what a was in stored for Carter if he failed. "It's been almost a year and we can't catch a single girl!"

Captain Cara slams he fist on her desk causing a few of her papers to float to the ground.

"Get cleaned up, I'm tired of seeing your ugly face." She says to Carter who is still standing to her left. He has a murderous look in his eyes. He seems different but Captain Cara does not notice.

Without a word Carter walks out the office and to the med-bay I'd assume. He makes his way to the clean and pristine wing of the med-bay and Lucy the on-call nurse looks at his wound and

flirts with him. Normally he'd flirt back but he just stays silent contemplating the events of the last few hours.

Alaina was safe for now but the other hunters he'd sent on a wild goose chase would soon return without any luck and retrace their steps and find Alaina at Aurelia's hut eventually. He just hoped she'd recover fast enough and leave before then.

"Carter, back so soon," Neo says leaning against the doorframe. Carter turns and shows his new battle scar. "Woah, did the little rogue she-wolf do that to you?" He asks, taking a cool long stride towards Carter.

"No," He replies simply. Neo frowns and holds Carter face to look at the claw marks.

"Captain Cara then?" Neo asks after his assessment. Carter doesn't say anything and this gives Neo the confirmation he'd been looking for.

"Why is it taking you so long to find one mangy mutt?" Neo jokes but Carter grabs his throat in a swift motion.

"She's not a rogue or a mangy mutt." He says, eyes flaring. Neo gasps for air, unable to fight Carter until he decides to release him.

"Damn, man what the hell. What crawled up your ass and died." Neo asks between gasps and coughs air filling his lungs once more.

"Why must we bring her in? What has she done?" Carter asks more to himself but Neo's wolf senses allow him to hear every word.

"Why are so testy over a she-" He doesn't finish his sentence realisation hits him like a brick. Carter never asked why he was to bring in a target, he just did it. He was also defending a she-wolf. "Carter, is she your mate?"

Once again Neo takes Carter's silence as confirmation. Neo just looks at Carter as if he was seeing a whole person. He blinks trying his best to pretend he hadn't just found out why Carter hadn't captured the rogue she-wolf as yet. Carter doesn't say anything and avoids eye contact as if reading Neo's thoughts.

"Have you been leading the hunter away from her this entire time?"

"No!" Carter says a bit too quickly. He wasn't lying though. He'd only been called in to bring in Alaina after the other hunters were incompetent. He just thought they couldn't do their jobs right. He hadn't expected himself to become so incompetent because of her.

Neo sighs and runs a hand through his hair in frustration. He wouldn't tell Carter, but he knew the consequences of keeping something like this from the Captain.

"If that's the case how can you bring her in? No one knows what is expected once she's captured." Neo says placing a hand on Carter. "Are you going to continue to protect her?"

"I haven't figured it out yet." Carter says truthfully, feeling his wolf stir and become unsettled.

"You're going to have to figure that out fast." Neo says and leaves Carter in his thoughts.

"How is the wound healing?" Lucy asks as she takes another look at Carter's wound. "It looks just about healed but it may leave a slight scar."

"Lucy." Carter rasps looking at her. He had no clue what he had to do. On one hand he knew he had to bring her in, he'd sworn an oath but Alaina was his mate, the one he'd been waiting for since he turned sixteen.

"Yes" Lucy asks as she places some ointment on Carter 's wound and bandages it up.

"How do you know when to betray someone for love?" Lucy blushes, not sure who he was referring to but hoping it was her.

"When you love someone nothing should stand in your way." Lucy says blissfully as she looks to Carter, a certain look in her eyes. "Carter I-"

Lucy doesn't get the chance to confess her feelings for Carter as he's up before she even realises.

"Where are you going?" She chokes out realising he was not talking about her. Why was she so delusional over a man that already had someone destined for him.

"To not let anything stand in my way." He calls back and Lucy's fae heart breaks. They were both of different species, if he had feelings for her his werewolf instincts would not have let him stay away from her for this long. With tears in her eyes she wishes him luck.
