As the sun sets over the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, its omnipresent light spreads across Rio De Janeiro. In the heart of Rio's Favelas, where poverty and crime coexist, the city's most successful mafia, the "Andrades," is located. Tonight is the night before the mafia's arduous deal is completed. It's the night before Adriana Andrades' 18th birthday, the night before she is unknowingly sold off to the rival Italian mafia, the "Romanos."
Adriana and her mother are spending the evening reminiscing over their past, as they do every year. However, this year feels much more despairing."Mãe, por que você parece tão triste?" Mum, why do you look so sad?" Adriana asks."Oh, nothing, I'm just realising how quickly my baby is growing up," her mother replies. And although this only feels half true, Adriana quickly pushes it aside.
"Mamãe, when do I get my first true task like Afonso?"
"You know I disagree with the tasks your Papai sets your brother, please stop asking, your job here is to make sure everything is perfect for special events like tonight, okay Princesa? Now stop asking." her mother replies quickly growing agitated.
"But mamãe-"
"Enough!" yells her mother
For the remainder of the evening, the two sit in uncomfortable silence up until they sit at a large rectangular table in the centre of a large dining room. At the head of the left end of the table, sits Ricardo Andrades, Adriana's father, surrounded by his family, and colleagues, as well as the maids and other staff members. Her father starts his draining annual speech about how grateful he is to have his wonderful daughter and that they should all be excited for another year of Adriana's life. He then goes on to drain on politics and business talks with surrounding business partners.
As the evening progresses, Adriana senses a growing tension but chooses to ignore it. This night was meant to be hers, an opportunity to let loose and do as she pleases. As the music slows down, Adriana finds a dance partner and they spend the rest of the night dancing away until the late hours. Everyone at the party had consumed too much alcohol and was growing tired. As the music started for one last dance, the grand ballroom doors suddenly burst open, revealing a large group of men dressed in sleek black suits.
The enigmatic leader spoke, "I hope I'm not late to the party, Ricardo," before issuing orders in a foreign language.
Guns appeared from all angles, some from the Andrades' side and some from the mystery group's side.
Ricardo yelled, panic lacing his voice, "Rosso, put your weapon down! You are not welcome here tonight!"
Rosso raised a brow before saying something in his language, causing all guns on his side to disappear back into people's pockets.
"What are you doing here, Rosso?" Ricardo asked, his voice trembling with an unknown cause, possibly anger, possibly fear.
"I'm here to collect what's mine, of course," Rosso claimed menacingly, smirking and looking towards Adrianna.
