Chapter 3.
_____
"What were you thinking signing me up for that volunteering programme?" I screamed to my mother. I dropped myself down onto the living room couch and buried my head in my hands.
"I was thinking about you Hailey. It was either the volunteering programme or you would have been expelled!..." My mother yelled at me as she paced around the living room.
I sat down and I decided to make myself comfortable as she went on and on lecturing me about being 'responsible' and controlling my 'temper'. What temper? She's never understood the fact that other people could be at fault. I practically rushed by Mrs. Adeline when she took a elbow to the face for being too close at the wrong time.
And Megan? She probably didnt even get called into Principle Hackett's office once. Megan always gets let of easily with her father being rich and all. He usually just pays the school an atrocius amount of money to always get her off the hook.
It had been around an hour and my mother was still going on. I knew she was trying to get her point across as well as possible but couldn't really concentrate with all the crazy hand gestures she was making. She looked flustered and her face was a strange shade of red, like the colour of the side of a rotten tamatoe. She always looked dissapointed when she faced me, there had never been a time where she looked at me and felt proud.
I couldn't take it anymore, I didnt know how much longer I could handle her endless lecture.
"Mom," I sighed, leaning forward and placing both my hands on the table in front of me. "There's gotta be another way i could get out of thi-"
"Get out of this?!" She interrupted, raising her voice once more. "Hailey, there is no way you're going to get out of this! Not this time. Normal people actually get punished for their innopropriate actions..."
"What was innapropriaste about it?! I elbowed my English teacher because of Megan freaking Baxter. I wouldnt call it innapropriate Mom, its called a set-up." I said clenching my palms into a fist.
"You're acting as if none of this is your fault..." She stood up, standing infront of me, making sure i felt the full affect of a parental authority."...but im saying that you're going to that Volunteering programme."
I crossed my arms in disbelief. Why couldnt he just have given me detention for the rest of the semester?
I sat silently trying to breathe. My hands were made into fists and my throat was itching for a bottle of vodka. I looked straight into her eyes but she showed no sympathy and I saw no trust. She didnt trust me. I felt my lip quiver as i tried to rebel against her decision.
"Do you understand me Hailey?" She said strictly, I was quick to reply.
"So thats what its come too?" I let out, "Is it going to be like this from now on where you say something and I immediately follow your commands like a stray dog? This is totally unfair! You're being completely irrational about this decision! You're acting as if I'm the leader of a drug dealing gang."
"I don't know are you? Because these days i really dont know what you are Hailey."
I grunted in frustration.
Getting up, I turned on my heels and made my way to my bedroom, not being able to even finish the dicussion. Once I reached my bedroom, I slammed the door shut and dropped myself onto my unmade bed.
_____
The next morning I sat with my best friend, Mikayla, at the nearest coffee shop before school.
If there was one way to describe Mikayla, it would be that she was never consistent. Mikayla never failed to impress people with her personality but she was always considerted over-dramatic. She'd be delirious and a bliss as if the world was her playground but then would feel like a crazy, emotional lonely cat lady in her forties. She was weird and wild. Nevertheless, she was considered normal comparted to me.
Mikayla had beautiful heart shaped face complimented with piercing baby blue eyes, full lips and dimpled smile, Her skin is light with a milk and rose complexion She has a curvaceous frame with slim, shapely legs. Her wavy golden blonde hair was long; she cut it short before the start of senior year which gained alot of attention and sky rocketed her into the top of the hierarchy .
She was gorgoues from head to toe but it never got to her head which is why shes always been my best friend. Underneath all that 'beautiful body image', she was the most caring and joyful person I had ever met.
Through all the shit, she's stood by me.
"So, are they like forcing you to go?" She asked in disbelief, "As in your parents and Principal Hackett?"
"Yeah, well Principal Hackett to a certain extent. He basically said that the only other option was expulsion."
"And your parents?"
"My father didnt really say anything, he never really does say anything that concerns me. My mother had a whole lot to say about me. She kept on going on about how drinking and partying has ruined my life, that she 'doesnt know who I am anymore'."
Mikayla sighed, fliiping her hair away from her face to take a bite from her muffin. "Hailey, she probably just means well. Think about it this way, this volunteering programme might not be as bad as you think."
"Oh not you too." I said in desbelief. Am i the only that thinks expulsion might be a better than a six-month volunteering programnme? Its sounds like torture.
"...C'mon, expulsion? If I was in your situation, I'd take the sappy volunteering programme option in a heartbeat."
I watched her as she stuffed the muffin in her face. Mikayla may have had the face that could have people call her an 'American sweetheart' but she ate like a crazy gorilla when she was extremely hungry.
"That's digusting Mikayla. How can you stuff all that in your mouth? You look like a wackjob who's never tried a muffin before." I laughed in digust.
"It's chcocolate chip." She moaned with great pleasure.
My thoughts trailed back to my decision. Oh god, between Mikayla eating like a beast and my mother entering me in a volunteering programme, my right eye started twitching a little uncontrollably.
I needed a drink and a lot of patient for tomorrow.
