Chapter 1
“Shelby, are you alright?” It was Jace, the demon before us had just exploded and the black demon blood was all over me, burning my skin where it landed.
“Yeah, I think so.” I placed my seraph blade back in my pocket and pulled my Sensor out of my pocket. It wasn't doing anything, meaning the demons were either gone, or we had killed them all.
Alec and Isabelle were no where to be seen, we walked forwards, searching for them.
“Alec? Isabelle? Where are you guys?” That's when something jumped out from behind a building and ran at me. The minute it touched my skin, a dizzying sensation racked through my body, forcing me to close my eyes.
I felt my feet leave the ground, and I felt Jace's hand grab mine, I could feel the ring I wore on my hand digging into my finger. It was Jace's ring really, the Herondale family ring.
I heard his voice yell my name, then the pressure of his hand on mine was gone, and so was the world.
I felt myself hit pavement, and I looked up into the dim light of a streetlight. But it looked different. Not only was it dimmer, but there was just something off about it.
The city itself was dark, not a single light coming from any of the houses. I didn't recognize this part of New York, if I was even in New York anymore.
There were no other people on the street, besides myself, and the chilly wind brought the smell of water to me. I walked carefully up the street, but there was nothing, no one.
I don't know how long I had been walking when I saw him, wandering the streets as I was.
His black hair was damp from who knows what and I couldn't imagine what he was doing wandering around the streets as I was, but I knew it was him.
“Alec!” I called out, expecting him to turn around with a look of relief on his face. But he did not.
“Alec!” I yelled again, rushing towards him, the air stinging my cheeks.
I had reached him now, and touched his shoulder, and he turned around, surprised.
“Alec, what are you doing-” I gazed into his face and realized that this was not Alec. Very similar, but it was not him.
“Sorry, I could have sworn you were someone I knew.” He looked down at me, his blue eyes looking over my black Shadowhunter gear.
“And why is a lady such as yourself walking around at this late hour?” His voice had a hint of an accent, but I couldn't tell what it was.
“I-I don't know. I don't even know where I am.” I saw him glance at my exposed arms, which were covered with the Marks that came with being a Shadowhunter.
