Chapter 8

Walking down the long corridors, I didn't really think that I was going to find Tessa's older brother. I didn't really care. All I really cared about was that I could fell Jem's hand intertwined with mine, and it felt like a million sparks shooting up my arm.

As we came to a corridor that split, Jem released my hand so we could cover more ground. Slightly disappointed I walked down the hall, and when I came to the drawing room, I could hear shuffling sounds from inside.

I carefully walked forwards, pushing open the door silently. Nathaniel stood in a corner, his face pale with fear. He was mumbling nonsense, his eyes wide.

“Nathaniel, I'm not going to hurt you.”

“Yes, yes you will. He told me you would hurt me.” He backed into a corner, and held up a candlestick for defense. “He told me you would hurt me, you are all the same. Nephilim, you want to hurt me!”

He lunged for me with the candlestick held high. I dodged easily, sidestepping. I pushed down the thoughts streaming through my head about attacking back. He was obviously deranged of the mind.

He came at me again, screaming, his face with a fine layer of sweat on it, his eyes wide with full scale panic.

“Nathaniel.” I said again, as he swung the candlestick at me. “I swear I am not going to hurt you! Now put the damn candle down!”

He ignored me, and rushed me again, only to have Will wrap his arm around his waist and pull hold him back.

Nathaniel screamed, it was a high, fear-filled wailing. Tessa came in, glaring at Will.

“What on earth are you doing to him?!”

“He was attacking Shelby; I was preventing him from getting himself hurt.” Will answered, as Nathaniel's eyes focused on Tessa.

“You have to help me, they want to hurt me.”

“No Nate, they don't. They want to help us.” Tessa told him, her voice soft. Nathaniel stopped struggling against Will, and he dropped the candlestick.

Will released him and Tessa sat him down in a chair, covering him with a blanket. Charlotte, Henry, Jem, and Jessamine came in the room then, looking at all of us with half worry and half relief on their faces.
